Abriella gave Emmy a look like she’d lost her mind. “Who on earth brings their boss to a blind date? Do I look like I want my job to get any harder?”
She clung to Emmy’s arm and turned on the charm. “Please, Emmy, just a little bit of your time? Come with me, pretty please?”
“We haven’t even had time to get our nails done together lately! Can’t you do this one tiny thing for me?”
Emmy could never resist when Abriella acted like this. She caved with a sigh. “Alright, alright, you win.”
Abriella’s face lit up, but before she could celebrate, Emmy added, “How about I come to Applewood Estate early tomorrow night? I’ll book a manicurist to come over and we can get our nails done together.”
Emmy glanced at her own chipped nails. “Honestly, mine are a mess too. I could really use it.”
Abriella pouted, her excitement fading. “That’s not what I meant…”
The car pulled up in front of the detective agency. After Emmy dropped Abriella off, she checked her watch—still plenty of time left in the day.
She headed back to her apartment, opened her laptop, and got a few lines of code in before her phone buzzed.
It was a message from James.
My favorite wife: [Something came up. You go ahead. I’ll have Will bring the gifts over. I might be a bit late.]
Emmy frowned, worry creeping in. Her first thought was that the fire station had another emergency—just the idea made her heart tighten.
She texted back quickly: [Be careful. Don’t rush over, okay?]
When Emmy got to Pepper Estate, she spotted Will in the parking lot, juggling a bunch of gift bags. As soon as he saw her, he hurried over.
“Hey, Emmy! James put these together for you to bring in.”
