Her voice went cold in an instant, sharp and defensive, with a hint of wounded pride.
“I’ll agree to almost anything, but not this. No way.”
“You have no idea what the last ten years have been like for us.”
“When I was broke and desperate, scraping by without enough to eat, he was the one who stuck with me. We made it through in a cramped ten-square-meter apartment, just the two of us.”
“When I wanted to learn programming, he worked three jobs, day and night, just to pay for my classes. That’s how I got my start.”
“And now that everyone sees me as Riverdale’s rising star, you think I should just kick him to the curb? That’s not me. I’m not that kind of ungrateful woman.”
Emmy frowned, her tone hardening.
“But he cheated on you, Krystina. A man like that doesn’t deserve you.”
“Then blame me!” Krystina burst out, her temper flaring.
“Blame me for getting so wrapped up in the company these past few years that I ignored what he needed! He went looking for a younger woman, but it was just... it was just physical, that’s all!”
It sounded like she was trying to convince Emmy, but maybe she was really talking to herself.
“If I just spend more time at home, he’ll focus on me again, just like before.”
Krystina gave Emmy a little shove toward the dining room, impatience all over her face.
“I know you’re looking out for me, but I can handle my own life. You should worry about yourself instead. With that good-looking husband of yours, you better keep an eye out—some sly girl might steal him away!”
Emmy could only sigh at her stubbornness.
Still, thinking about the disaster waiting six months down the road, she couldn’t help herself.
“Krystina, your success isn’t just because of what he did for you. You got here because you worked hard and never gave up.”
“There are lots of ways to repay someone, but giving away your whole life isn’t it.”
“Yeah, yeah, I get it!” Krystina waved her off, clearly annoyed.
“Let’s eat. I’m starving!”
Who knew if any of that had sunk in.
Emmy followed her through the beaded curtain into a bustling dining room.
Jules’s two kids—a girl of eight and a boy of four—were racing around the table, giggling and squealing.
Krystina’s son Ollie, four years old, had joined the chaos, and the three of them were laughing so loudly it nearly shook the ceiling.
Dr. Pepper sat at the head of the table, grinning as she watched the kids zoom past, calling out for them to slow down.
Emmy slid into the empty seat next to James.
