James stood up right away, giving Dominic a respectful nod.

“Sir, I’m sorry. It’s my fault you didn’t get to really enjoy the game.”

His voice was low, his attitude completely sincere.

“I’m just not that good at chess yet. I wanted to learn from you, but your moves are bold and unpredictable. Every step has some hidden trick. I was so busy trying to keep up that all I did was defend—I didn’t even give you a proper challenge. That’s on me.”

He said it in a way that praised Dominic’s skill and put himself clearly in the student’s seat.

Whatever annoyance Dominic had been feeling vanished. He beamed, stroking his beard, and the more he looked at James, the more he liked him.

“You’ve got a sharp tongue, don’t you?”

He tried to sound gruff, but the admiration in his eyes gave him away.

“All right, it’s late. Let’s all head home.”

Everyone started to get up and say their goodbyes.

Emmy slipped her arm through James’s and the two of them walked side by side toward the parking lot.

The night air was a little chilly, but in a way that felt refreshing.

They’d just rounded a clump of holly bushes when they heard Krystina’s voice nearby, tight with frustration.

“What is your problem?”

“I came to the Capital for work, not to be your full-time nanny! Now you’re just leaving and expecting me to take care of Ollie?”

“You think it’s that easy to find a babysitter? I have a work dinner tonight!”

Whatever the person on the other end said only made her angrier. She practically yelled before hanging up.

Her chest was still heaving when she turned and spotted Emmy and James watching her.

A flash of embarrassment crossed Krystina’s face.

“My husband… he just left without even telling me. He was supposed to come tonight too, to see the professor. Ugh…”

She glanced at her son and suddenly her eyes lit up. She grabbed Ollie’s little hand and hurried over to Emmy.

“Emmy, can you do me a favor?”

Her eyes were pleading. “Just watch Ollie for two days, please! As soon as I finish this project, I’ll come pick him up.”

Emmy didn’t even have time to react before Ollie hugged her leg tight.

He looked up at her, his little face sweet and hopeful, big dark eyes shining.

“Emmy, I like you. Can I stay with you and play?”

His voice was so soft and cute, Emmy couldn’t bring herself to say no.

She froze, at a total loss.
