Emmy looked into his red, swollen eyes and finally let out a quiet sigh.
If Danny hadn’t been the only assistant close enough to her, Claudia never would’ve targeted him in the first place. And if not for that, his dad wouldn’t have been on the road that night, tired and distracted, when he hit an old man by accident.
The old man’s kids were ruthless. They demanded a million dollars before they’d even think about signing a settlement.
Danny’s father was just an honest, hardworking man from the countryside. He sold their house and land, scraped together everything he could, but still barely managed to come up with three hundred thousand. His mom’s health was always fragile. The shock of it all sent her straight to the hospital with a stroke.
Then, out of nowhere, someone approached Danny, offering to fix everything.
For someone like him, who valued his family above all else, it wasn’t really a choice. Stealing? That was nothing. He would have risked his own life if it meant saving them, and he wouldn’t have thought twice.
So he became someone else’s pawn, just like that.
Ever since James warned her about a traitor close by, Emmy started watching everyone. The bodyguards were all from Shadow Core, Nelson’s people—totally loyal, impossible for Claudia to reach. Process of elimination left only Danny: close, trusted, and vulnerable.
But she was already too late. Claudia moved fast. By the time Emmy tried to investigate, Danny’s dad was already tangled up in lawsuits and his mom was in the hospital. If Emmy made a move then, it would just tip Claudia off. There was nothing she could do.
So she decided to play along.
She gave Danny a different laptop every now and then, making sure he had something to hand over. That way, he could give Claudia what she wanted, and Claudia would keep her promise to help his family.
But when the truth finally came out, when Emmy realized Danny had betrayed her, a wave of disgust washed over her—so strong she almost couldn’t breathe. Nothing made her sicker than being lied to, being betrayed. But even that feeling was mixed up with too many other things.
Because at the end of the day, Danny wouldn’t be in this mess if it wasn’t for her fight with Claudia. His family was just collateral damage.
She’d spent days trying to find a good moment to talk to him, but something always got in the way. In the end, it was Ollie stumbling in today that gave her the opening she needed.
And thank God, Danny still had enough conscience left to do the right thing. If he hadn’t, he never would’ve given up that lock of hair so easily, never would’ve come clean about everything.
