Danny shot three fingers into the air, swearing like his life depended on it.
“Ms. Lincoln, whatever you tell me to do, I’ll do it. No hesitation.”
“If I ever even think about betraying you again, may I never have another good day in my life!”
“That’s enough,” Emmy said, frowning as she stepped forward to help him up. “From now on, just do whatever they ask. Act like nothing’s changed.”
Danny stood, worry written all over his face. “But Ms. Lincoln, your system—I already...”
“It doesn’t matter. If she wants you to hack, you hack. Don’t overthink it. Just go along with whatever she says.”
“All I need is for you to give me a heads-up about their moves. Let me know before anything happens, that’s all.”
Danny listened closely and nodded, serious and determined.
Emmy turned and spotted the sealed bag on her desk—the one with her hair inside.
Why did Claudia want this? Was she planning a DNA test or something?
She pressed her lips together and handed the bag to Danny.
“Give this to her, just like before. And see if you can figure out what she’s really up to. If you can’t, don’t stress. The main thing is to keep yourself safe.”
“Ms. Lincoln…” Danny took the bag, his hands shaking. “Thank you for still trusting me. I—I…”
Watching a grown man get teary-eyed, Emmy couldn’t help but sigh.
“Go grab some ice water from the fridge. Put it on your face to help the swelling. Don’t let them see anything’s off.”
She paused, her voice firmer. “Save the speeches. I only care about what you do, not what you say.”
Danny nodded hard, clutched the bag, and slipped out the door.
As soon as the door clicked shut, Emmy finally let herself breathe. She grabbed her phone and made a call.
“Keep an eye on Danny,” she ordered.
She was pretty sure Danny was on her side now. Pretty sure. But trust, once broken, never really goes back to the way it was. No matter how many promises he made, she couldn’t let herself trust him completely.
