“We should actually talk,” he added, hopeful.

Emmy didn’t even bother to look at him. Her voice was cool, cutting right through his hope.

“Did you find out who really killed my mom?”

Dean’s face fell, the light in his eyes snuffed out. He stood there, stiff, awkward, not saying a word.

With just one glance, Emmy saw right through him. A sharp, almost mocking smile tugged at her lips.

“So you didn’t?”

“Or is it that you’re just… too afraid to actually look for the truth?”

Dean’s brows drew together, his voice coming out low and heavy.

“She didn’t set up a memory cache when she created her profile. I can’t see everything she was thinking.”

Emmy narrowed her eyes, piecing it together. Evelina had been careful. In the VR world, everything could be tweaked and hidden with just a thought, and Evelina clearly hadn’t wanted Dean stumbling across something she was hiding. No cache, no evidence. But Emmy couldn’t just let it go. She had to clear her mom’s name.

“I can set up an external memory cache for you,” she offered, her voice steady. “If you don’t trust me, get someone else to do it—”

Before she could finish, Dean shoved the VR headset into her arms.

“I trust you.”

Right then, a tall figure filled the balcony doorway. James stood there, one hand in his pocket, gaze skipping right over Dean and landing on Emmy.

He reached out, voice low and steady.

“Let’s go home, babe.”

Without a second look at Dean, Emmy moved to James, sliding her hand into his.
