Emmy’s eyebrows pinched together in an instant.
“How did they all end up at the club so suddenly?”
Annoyance simmered under her skin. She’d warned them over and over. These board members were all veterans—they should know better than to get reckless at a time like this.
Her assistant’s voice was so anxious it was almost frantic.
“It was Mr. Carter. He used a business deal to lure the board members there.”
“Mr. Drennon sensed something was off before he even went inside. He told me if he wasn’t out in thirty minutes, I had to call you right away. He said… this would be your best chance to make a move.”
So that was it.
Emmy understood Grandpa Buckley’s plan in a flash.
This wasn’t some careless mistake. They knew exactly what they were walking into—and did it anyway.
They walked straight into Cooper’s trap on purpose, just to make the evidence against him airtight.
Emmy snapped her laptop closed and grabbed her things, ready to bolt.
She glanced back at Krystina. “Sorry, something urgent came up. Can we rain check?”
Krystina saw the steely look in Emmy’s eyes and didn’t hesitate for a second. She grabbed her laptop bag in one hand and Ollie’s hand in the other, catching up in a couple of quick strides.
“You’re moving like the world’s on fire. Need backup?”
Emmy paused, meeting her gaze.
“Yeah, actually.”
She didn’t bother with small talk. “I could use the help.”
Krystina just grinned. “Please. You watched my kid all week. You don’t owe me anything.”
Moments later, their Bentley slid into the darkest corner of the street outside the club, hidden by shadows.
Emmy set her laptop on her knees, her fingers moving so fast they blurred.
“The place is locked down tight. No way to get in. Our only shot is to track down Grandpa Buckley and the others online.”
Krystina fired up her own laptop, typing quickly.
Her eyebrows shot up. “They’re using a serious signal jammer—this whole place is a digital black hole. We’ll have to break through their physical firewall first.”
A confident little smile tugged at Krystina’s lips.
“But come on, tricks like this only fool amateurs. I’ll crack their encrypted channel and get you a safe tunnel in. You focus on hacking their internal surveillance.”
