A flash of doubt flickered through Emmy’s mind.
Weren’t Evelina and her mother always two peas in a pod, totally in sync? Why would they suddenly be fighting? But the thought barely lasted a second before she shoved it aside.
Now, just hearing their names made her stomach twist, pure disgust and a flood of hate bubbling up inside her. She didn’t ask any more questions. Instead, she lowered her gaze and pretended to read her book.
Next door, things were tense. Claudia glared at her daughter, her anger barely contained.
Her voice was low but every word hit hard. “Forget about Dean. Juan’s interested in you. You need to use him. Don’t waste this opportunity.”
Evelina’s eyes were red and watery, her voice raw as she protested, “Why? Why can’t I be with Dean? I love him. I want to marry him!”
“I’ve told you a hundred times. You can’t fall for a man. Are you even listening to me?”
Claudia slammed her phone on the nightstand, making her point crystal clear. “Call Juan. Right now. If you screw up my plans, I’ll send you overseas and you’ll never set foot back here again.”
Just thinking about her mother’s ruthless tricks made Evelina shudder. She hesitated, but in the end, she caved. “Fine, I’ll call. But I want out of this hospital. I can’t stay in this dump any longer.”
Claudia gave a quick nod. “Fine.”
Then her tone softened in a heartbeat. “Eve, everything I do is for your own good. Once you’re at the top, you can have any man you want. Love is worthless, cheap. Power and money are what you should chase for life.”
Evelina knew her mom wasn’t wrong. Claudia had clawed her way up from nothing, becoming a big deal both here and overseas. But Evelina just couldn't let go of Dean.
She hated it. How could a guy as handsome and talented as Dean slip away and end up with Emmy, that two-faced witch?
Right now, Dean was the most promising young star in the Capital. Even Mr. Nelson couldn’t compare—Dean had taken Sparrow Group to second place, just behind Nelson Corporation, all in a matter of months.
Evelina was convinced Dean would surpass Mr. Nelson one day.
What she couldn’t wrap her head around was why her mom insisted she give up Dean now, of all times, and marry Juan instead.
