When James reached for the paper bag, he stood up all of a sudden.
The comforter slipped down, tracing the sharp lines of his body.
Emmy’s breath hitched. She hadn’t been ready for this. The sight in front of her was more intense—and a lot less expected—than anything she’d seen before. Her heart pounded as she spun around, face burning.
Behind her, James’s voice came, low and teasing.
“It’s not like you haven’t seen it before. You’ve touched it, too. What are you so shy about?”
Emmy’s cheeks, already flushed, went hot enough to fry an egg.
Thank goodness no one else was here.
She gritted her teeth and shot back over her shoulder, “Just shut up! You’re the station chief, don’t you have any shame?”
James laughed, the sound rich and full of mischief.
“What’s there to hide? You’re my wife. I can say whatever I want.”
Suddenly, he made a surprised noise, sounding almost delighted.
“Wait, did you buy me new boxers?”
Emmy took a deep breath, trying to get her voice under control.
“I threw away those old, torn ones. If they’re falling apart, stop forcing yourself to wear them. If you need something, I’ll get it for you.”
For a second, the room went quiet.
Then James let out a deep laugh that filled the space, warm and happy.
“Got it, babe.”
She didn’t answer.
James stretched, sounding lazy and just a little smug.
“They fit pretty well, you know. Want to turn around and check?”
“No way!” Emmy’s face was on fire. She turned to leave.
“Hurry up and get dressed! I’m going back now!”
But before she could escape, he grabbed her wrist, spinning her around and pulling her right into his arms.
James looked down at her, smiling, eyes full of mischief.
