When Emmy walked into the apartment, the sun was already setting. Krystina was sitting cross-legged on the rug, nose buried in a book. She barely glanced up as Emmy came in.

“You’re back so early?” Krystina asked, half-distracted.

Emmy paused, confused for a second. Early? She’d barely been out the door all day.

She let out a small laugh. “It’s almost dark, Krystina.”

“Oh,” Krystina replied, not even looking up.

Emmy tried again. “Come on, let’s go out to eat with Ollie. My treat.”

Krystina just waved her off, eyes glued to the page. “No thanks. Just make me some instant noodles.”

Emmy almost laughed out loud. “And Ollie?”

“Make him a bowl too.”

Emmy gave up trying to reason with her workaholic friend. Shaking her head, she grabbed her phone and ordered takeout from a highly-rated spot nearby.

When James came home, Krystina was still there, camped out on the sofa with her book. Time crawled toward eleven. Emmy yawned, trying to keep her eyes open.

Finally, James had enough. He led Emmy into the bedroom, closed the door, and lowered his voice. “Is your friend ever going to leave?”

“I have no idea,” Emmy whispered. “I’m too embarrassed to ask.”

James looked so frustrated it was almost comical.

He told Emmy to go get ready for bed, then stepped out to handle things himself.

In the living room, Ollie was rubbing his eyes, voice soft and sleepy. “Mom, I’m tired.”

Krystina patted his head. “Sleep on the couch for now. When I finish this chapter, I’ll take you to the hotel.”

Ollie curled up and was out in seconds.

James made several trips for water, hoping Krystina would get the hint, but she didn’t move—totally lost in her book.

Defeated, James slipped back into the bedroom, turned off the light, and pulled Emmy into his arms. The scent of her hair was sweet, her waist soft and delicate under his hand. She fit perfectly against him, but there was nothing he could do with her friend still in the other room.
