The judge took the manila envelope, frowning as he opened it. Without a word, he handed it off to the clerk and gave a quick nod to have it checked for authenticity.
Tim saw this and sat up even straighter, his confidence growing. He raised his voice and practically yelled, “And besides that paternity test, almost everyone here knows Teresa had a thing with Andrew before she married Greg! She was still tangled up with her ex, even after the wedding. That’s why Emmy—her bastard kid—was born!”
“Order!” the judge snapped.
A bailiff stepped up fast, glaring at Tim and warning him to be quiet.
Tim flinched, shoulders pulling in, but he looked pretty pleased with himself as he slouched back into his seat.
The whole courtroom erupted. The younger people looked lost, but the older folks exchanged glances, everyone remembering the rumors about Teresa and Andrew from years ago.
Back then, Teresa and Andrew were the golden couple on campus, always together at fancy parties for their club. The connection between them was obvious to anyone watching.
Then the Drennon family’s precious daughter ended up in a scandal with a broke guy. One wild night ruined her reputation. People still shook their heads about it, even now.
So when the story resurfaced, all those years of Teresa’s gentle, graceful image shattered. Suddenly, everyone saw her as reckless and messy. No wonder Cooper found someone else, they whispered.
Gossip and judgment filled the air, every glance like a dagger aimed at Teresa.
She went pale, opening her mouth to defend herself, but before she could say a word, a steady, clear voice rang out from the gallery.
“Your Honor!”
Andrew was on his feet, his calm face twisted in anger and urgency no one had ever seen from him before.
“I have never—never—done anything improper with Teresa! Not before she married Greg, not ever!”
“And as for Emmy being my daughter—that’s completely untrue. It’s ridiculous!”
The bailiff jumped in, voice sharp. “Everyone in the gallery, keep silent!”
But Andrew ignored him. He looked straight at Teresa, voice trembling with pain and determination.
“Teresa is innocent. She shouldn’t have to put up with these lies. I’m begging the court—please see the truth and clear her name!”
He was so worked up that two bailiffs hurried over, grabbing him and forcing him back to his seat.
“Andrew, please…” Teresa’s voice cracked as tears spilled down her cheeks.
Hearing her, Andrew finally stopped struggling and let the bailiffs push him down.
