“Your Honor, everyone here probably remembers learning about genetics in high school. We all know about dominant and recessive traits, right?”
“For instance, a high nose bridge is dominant over a low one. Thick eyebrows are dominant over thin ones. Curly hair is dominant over straight hair.”
Emmy turned to Andrew, her gaze steady.
“So, let’s all take a good look at Mr. Aldridge,” she said.
All eyes in the courtroom shifted to the man. Andrew’s face was still tight with anger, but his features were impossible to ignore. He looked different from most Americans—sharper lines, deeper eyes, more refined. Maybe there was some foreign blood in his family tree.
His nose was tall and straight, his brow bones stood out, and his hair was thick, black, and naturally wavy. His eyebrows were bold, almost regal, framing his eyes perfectly.
Without a word, Emmy reached up and, in front of everyone, pulled the tie from her hair. Instantly, her hair cascaded down—a sheet of black, pin-straight and smooth, spilling over her shoulders.
“Now, look at me,” she said.
Her face was delicate and unmistakably East Asian. Every feature was small and carefully shaped, like something painted by a master artist. Her nose was elegant but not high, her brow gentle and soft. Her eyebrows were thin, shaped by makeup, definitely not thick or bushy by nature.
She met the stares around her, steady and calm. “Can anyone tell me which of Mr. Aldridge’s dominant traits I inherited?”
The courtroom went dead silent.
“Oh, and there’s one more thing,” Emmy added, tilting her head.
“Both Mr. Aldridge and my mother have amber eyes. You can see it best when the light hits. But my eyes? They’re pure black.”
People couldn’t help but look at Teresa, then at Andrew, and finally every pair of eyes landed on Cooper at the defense table.
Nobody needed to say the answer out loud. It was obvious.
