The presiding judge had seen it all—or so he thought. After decades on the bench, he rarely came across someone as deeply guilty as the man standing trial today.
Every charge was worse than the last. Each one a new low. It was enough to make anyone’s skin crawl.
He slammed his gavel down. The sharp crack echoed through the courtroom, final and unforgiving.
“Order in the court!”
He rose, eyes blazing, voice cutting through the tense silence.
“Defendant Cooper. You are found guilty of adultery within your marriage, of hiding assets, stealing company secrets, assault, and premeditated murder.”
“On top of that, you are convicted for several old, serious offenses. The evidence is overwhelming. You have shown no remorse whatsoever.”
“After deliberation, this court now delivers its verdict.”
“Cooper, for your multiple crimes, you are sentenced to death.”
“The marriage between Cooper and Ms. Teresa is officially dissolved, effective immediately. All marital property in Cooper’s name will be returned to Ms. Teresa.”
“No—!”
The word “death” knocked the air out of Cooper. He went limp, slumping in his seat like a puppet with its strings suddenly cut.
He lifted his head, desperate, searching the courtroom for Teresa.
Regret hit him hard.
He really, truly regretted everything.
He’d messed up in ways he couldn’t even begin to fix.
He never should’ve trusted Claudia, that manipulative snake.
His wife was everything—elegant, gentle, dignified. His daughter was a once-in-a-lifetime prodigy, beautiful and brilliant.
He’d had everything other men only dreamed of.
So why had he thrown it all away? Why had he waded into that filth?
Happiness had been right there for the taking.
Now he didn’t even have the right to appeal. Two guards came up, one on each side, grabbing his arms and dragging him out.
In the gallery, Teresa couldn’t hold back any longer. She pressed her hands to her face, sobbing with relief and joy.
Emmy’s eyes filled with tears, and she finally let out a long, shaky breath.
It felt like a mountain had been lifted from her chest—a weight she’d carried for two lifetimes.
Grandpa, did you see that?
