Back when Cooper first married Teresa, it didn’t take long before he started feeling trapped. Teresa was perfect in every way—so flawless it was almost intimidating. Even in bed, she kept this invisible wall between them, as if she was too delicate to touch. Staring at her beautiful, porcelain face, he could never really lose himself. Everything felt stiff and awkward.
So he turned to Claudia. She made him feel wanted. Claudia always looked at him like he was her hero, feeding every ounce of his ego. With her, there were no rules, no boundaries—he could be wild, selfish, rough, and she never pushed him away. He didn’t even bother with protection. When Claudia said she didn’t want to take the pill anymore, he just shrugged. If you get pregnant, have the baby. I’m Cooper. I’ve got plenty of money. I’ll take care of you, and the kid too.
And then she did get pregnant.
Scared the Drennon family might find out, he sent Claudia out of the country in the middle of the night. For years, whenever he could, he’d fly overseas to enjoy the warmth and admiration of his secret second life.
He watched as Evelina grew up, making sure she learned everything Emmy did—only more, only better. He was determined to clear the way for Evelina to take over Starlight Corporation one day. Meanwhile, he kept telling Emmy over and over that a woman’s greatest value was to sacrifice for her husband and family. He sent Emmy off to some random second-tier college, cutting off her future without a second thought. At the same time, he spent a fortune getting Evelina into MIT, calling in favors and making sure nothing stood in her way.
But even then, the things Emmy did—her coding, the programs she threw together—left Evelina far behind. So Cooper started stealing. Again and again, he took Emmy’s hard work and gave it to Evelina, letting her take all the credit, all the praise.
He built Evelina’s future on Emmy’s blood and sweat, convinced he was doing the right thing, chasing some dream he thought he could create. And in the end, the girl he’d poured everything into wasn’t even his? She was someone else’s child all along?
It was insane. The cruelest joke life could play.
“No. No way…” he muttered, shaking his head like he could rattle the truth loose. “How could this happen?”
He couldn’t believe it. Everything he’d done, all the sacrifices, all the planning—it was all for nothing. It was all a lie.
He snapped his head up and slammed his hands on the table, the handcuffs clattering loudly in the silent courtroom.
“I want to see Claudia! Judge! I want to see her right now! I need to confront her face to face!”
“Order in the court!” The judge’s gavel hit the bench with a sharp crack, his cold voice echoing through the room.
