Steve didn’t hesitate. He walked right over and scooped her up in his arms.
“Mr. Mitchell, you seriously can’t just do that!” Will rushed after him, trying to sound all proper. “Let’s help her together, okay? One on each side.”
Steve stopped and shot Will a cold look.
He still remembered the first time Will met Abriella. The guy’s first question was whether she had a boyfriend.
“She’s my employee. What’s it got to do with you?” Steve’s tone was icy as he carried Abriella straight out.
Will kept up, following them all the way into the elevator, never taking his eyes off Steve, like he was ready to step in if Steve tried anything with the drunk Abriella.
He trailed them right up to Abriella’s door. Steve didn’t even glance at the keypad. Instead, he pressed his finger to the fingerprint reader.
There was a soft beep and the door swung open.
Will stared, completely shocked, pointing at Steve and stammering, “You… you…”
Steve just gave a smug little smirk and carried Abriella straight into her bedroom, gently laying her down.
Will followed, only relaxing once he was sure Steve wasn’t pulling anything sketchy. Then he turned to go.
Steve leaned against the doorway and said, “Ever heard the saying ‘closest at hand gets the prize’? Do you really think you can compete with me?”
Will’s face turned bright red. “I’m just making sure she’s safe, not trying to compete with you.”
With that, he left.
Steve made a dismissive noise but didn’t go anywhere. He wandered to the living room, flopped onto the couch, and closed his eyes.
.
As soon as everyone was gone, the big living room suddenly felt empty.
Emmy was about to say something to James, but his phone rang. He answered and, after a few short replies, his expression turned serious.
When he saw her coming over, he stepped out onto the balcony and shut the glass door behind him.
Emmy stopped. She didn’t follow. Instead, she sat back down on the sofa and scrolled through her phone, not really seeing anything.
She had no idea how much time passed before James finally came back inside, striding over quickly.
“I have to head out. Something urgent just came up.”
