Emmy’s fingers hovered over the keyboard, pausing just for a moment.
Claudia was making moves again.
Her goal was obvious—get rid of Emmy before the competition even started. That way, Evelina could walk in with Emmy’s system and never have to look over her shoulder.
Emmy tried to sound calm, “Relax, I always have my bodyguards with me. Nothing’s going to happen.”
But James didn’t come home at all that day.
Will texted her: James asked me to let you know he’s busy at the military base. He might not make it back tonight, so you should get some rest.
Reading his message, Emmy felt her restlessness growing, a vague frustration she couldn’t shake. She threw herself into her work, trying to drown out everything else.
Another day slipped by.
Monday morning, bright and early.
She headed to the hospital with Abriella. Danny’s warning kept echoing in her mind. Just to be safe, she brought two extra bodyguards this time.
Her appointment was with Dr. Townsend, one of the top internists in the capital. He’d been treating her stomach problems for years and knew her health better than anyone.
Dr. Townsend greeted her with his usual warmth. “Tell me what’s wrong today.”
Emmy explained her symptoms. He listened, then pushed his glasses up and suddenly changed the topic.
“When was the last time you and your husband were intimate?”
Emmy’s cheeks turned red. “We… we always use protection.”
He nodded. “Protection’s not a hundred percent. When was the last time?”
She looked down. “A couple of days ago.”
Dr. Townsend typed a few notes, then looked at her seriously.
“Your symptoms sound a lot like early pregnancy.”
“But let’s wait for the blood test to be sure.”
“I’ll have you get some blood drawn and do an ultrasound. Wait outside when you’re done—the nurse will call you when the results are in.”
Emmy left the exam room in a daze, her mind spinning.
