He paused, gathering his thoughts before continuing.
“There’s a ton of guys out there. Two by the riverside hut, a sniper in the left watchtower, three manning the machine gun nest across the river, and at least seven or eight more on patrol. They’re seriously armed.”
James’s eyes narrowed, zeroing in on the bamboo hut at six o’clock. His voice was steady and cool. “Spread out. Infiltrate.”
He didn’t waste a second. Like a shadow, he slipped down one of the stilt house’s pillars and slid into the river without a sound. Not even a splash—just a faint ripple on the water.
“Wait!” Will’s voice burst through the earpiece, suddenly sharp. “There’s someone else with Emmy—a foreigner. It’s… it’s—”
He sounded like he’d seen a ghost.
James surfaced just long enough to speak, his voice cold as ice. “Who?”
Will sucked in a breath and spat it out. “Dean! He’s got Emmy. They just left the hut. Looks like they’re heading for the jungle!”
“Shit!” Will’s panic spiked. “They’re heading straight for where Pearl’s holding the hostages. Pearl’s right there too!”
Meanwhile, Emmy was being dragged behind Dean, running for their lives through a hail of bullets.
It was pitch black, the only light coming from scattered flames in the distance—she could barely see where she was stepping.
Suddenly, Dean’s foot caught on something warm and solid—a body. He lost his balance and tumbled down the embankment, straight into the river.
Emmy, still clutching his hand, went with him.
The water swallowed them whole. Emmy came up gasping, choking as her head broke the surface.
“Emmy!” Dean grabbed her, shoving her toward the bank. “Get up there! Run for the woods!”
But the noise had already given them away.
A shaky, desperate voice called out nearby—one she knew all too well.
“Emmy! Help me, please! Help!”
She whipped her head around, searching, and by the flickering firelight she saw him—Tim.
