Bang!
Another shot rang out, quick and sharp. The drug dealer dropped instantly.
But before Emmy and Dean could catch their breath, more footsteps thundered in from every direction, closing in fast.
Dean didn’t even hesitate. He fired toward the shifting shadows, his jaw set.
Emmy’s heart hammered in her chest. She gripped the heavy pistol with both hands, eyes locked on the darkness to her left. The second anyone got close, she was ready to pull the trigger.
Bang!
The recoil hit her hard, sending pain jolting through her shoulder. Chaos exploded around them—gunshots, shouting, bullets tearing through the night air.
They were pinned behind an old tree, pressed low into the dirt, unable to move.
Suddenly, a wild spray of bullets tore across the ground, so close Emmy could almost feel the heat as they flew by. One of them slammed into the wooden post where Tim was hiding.
Emmy spun around, her stomach dropping. She saw Tim’s body jerk violently, then his head slumped forward, dropping into the river. He didn’t move again.
Dean’s breathing was ragged. He turned his head, voice rough as he spoke. “Emmy, if we die here… do you think there’s a next time for us? Would we get another chance?”
Emmy’s eyes burned with tears, but she didn’t look at him. She just stared into the darkness, watching the shadows shift.
She didn’t answer.
Another dealer appeared ahead. Emmy squeezed the trigger.
Click.
The empty sound hit her like a punch. No bullets left.
Her heart dropped.
Dean tossed away his own empty gun. They were surrounded. No way to run, nothing left to do.
He looked at Emmy—her face pale, eyes fierce, refusing to give up.
Up ahead, one of the dealers grinned and raised his gun, ready to finish them off. Dean grabbed Emmy’s wrist, squeezing tight, and closed his eyes.
If they had to die, at least they’d do it together.
