Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 407

For a moment, Cecilia was sure she was going to die.

Theodore knew everything. He would never forgive her.

But to her astonishment, after a few more cold scoffs, he simply stood up and walked out, leaving her alone in the private room.

After a moment of stunned silence, she scrambled for her phone and dialed Jared. "Jared! What do I do? Theo knows everything! He knows the baby is yours! He knows I wasn't the volunteer in high school, that I didn't fold those paper cranes! Jared, what am I going to do?"

Jared hung up on her.

She tried calling back, but he had already blocked her number.

An icy dread washed over her. How could this be happening? He had promised to take care of her and the baby. He had promised her a better life.

"Jared—you bastard!" she shrieked, but there was no one left to hear her, no one left to comfort her.

When Theodore left the restaurant, the men who had accosted him were gone.

He let out a small, wistful smile.

Did it really have to be this complicated? If she had just asked, he would have done anything for her…

His phone hadn't been lost; it had been lifted from his pocket as he entered the restaurant. When he went out to look for it, he was pulled into another room. He'd initially thought it was a robbery, but then one of the men, dressed as a waiter, had entered with his phone.

They told him to cooperate.

Cooperation meant resetting his phone and email passwords, and logging into a new email account they had set up on his device. He had no idea what was in that account until he got his phone back. They instructed him to choose a new password—something complex, but something his "brothers" might be able to guess.

So, he used the password from a game they had all played in college.

The man disguised as a waiter left with the newly configured phone. Theodore still didn't understand what was happening until they led him to the door of his private room and told him he could go back in.

When he entered, he saw Cecilia on a video call, her face illuminated by the screen of his phone. Only then did he understand. The email account they'd logged him into contained a single important message, sent a week prior. It was from an unknown address, and its subject line read, "Regarding Mr. Jared." The email was filled with attachments, each with a title claiming to be evidence of Jared's crimes.

In truth, because he had returned to the room so quickly, Cecilia hadn't had time to open any of the files. The titles alone were shocking enough.

As he stepped out of the restaurant, he saw a car pull away from the curb across the street. He suddenly knew whose car it was, who was inside, and who the so-called waiters had been.
