Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 410

"Mr. Jared, you're here," Melvin said, standing to greet him.

Latham also smiled in his direction.

Several other high-level executives were also present, all there to discuss future collaborations and attend the press conference. Jared moved through the room, shaking hands with Melvin, Latham, and the others.

Neither Melvin nor Latham showed any sign of unease, which put Jared at ease.

Latham began the proceedings. "Tonight was originally supposed to be hosted by Mr. Rossi himself. However, due to some unforeseen family circumstances, I will be hosting in his stead. I hope you can all understand."

Everyone in the room had heard the rumors about the poisoning. Latham's words seemed to confirm them, though no one dared to say it out loud. The main concern on everyone's mind was the future of Rossi Corp. If Young Rossi was truly out of the picture, would their expansion into Cresthaven still happen?

Someone finally voiced the question in a hushed tone.

Latham's response was carefully worded. "Mr. Rossi will provide a definitive answer to that question shortly. I suggest we wait for him."

Jared had to suppress a smile. *Wait for Mr. Rossi?* They could wait a lifetime.

Everyone knew the Rossi family was vast and powerful, but Larson's branch was the only one with roots in this country. If he was gone, a new leader would take his place. Would they still be interested in Cresthaven?

Latham invited everyone to dine. It was a buffet.

To be honest, Jared hadn't had a decent meal in days, his nerves shot. Now, he could finally relax and eat. He sat with Melvin.

"Mr. Laurent," Jared began, "you're quite young. You haven't been in this industry for long, have you?"

"No, I haven't," Melvin said with a shy smile. "I actually started out as an intern at your company. I was lucky enough to get my own firm off the ground and even luckier to be chosen by Rossi Corp."

Another executive joined them, clapping Melvin on the back. "Mr. Laurent, you're a rising star! The sky's the limit for you!"

Melvin remained humble, deflecting the praise back to Jared. "Mr. Jared is the true leader in our industry. I learned so much during my time at his company."

As more people gathered around, they laughed at Melvin's comment. "You, an intern, Mr. Laurent?"

The air filled with the usual business schmoozing, everyone eager to flatter the man chosen by Rossi.

Jared felt a prick of annoyance. *What a joke,* he thought. *The higher they build you up, the harder you'll fall.*

Away from Latham's earshot, the conversation inevitably turned to the poisoning rumors. Was there any truth to them?

Melvin hesitated. "I… I really don't know…"

Jared let out a small, knowing smirk.

"Mr. Jared, you seem to know something," another executive pressed.
