Ex-Alpha's Regret: Siren's Comeback novel Chapter 39

POV: Sylvie

Two days passed, and the quiet was driving me mad. Seraphina was still here. She hadn't fled. She hadn't broken down. My threat about the old servant had worked to keep her pinned down, but it hadn't given me the confirmation I so desperately needed. She was a ghost, moving through the halls with a placid, unnerving calm that felt more dangerous than her previous hysterics. My suspicion of her pregnancy was a fire in my gut, an obsession that consumed my every thought. I needed to know. I needed to see her break.

I decided a more direct approach was necessary. A psychological attack, veiled as a children's story.

I found them in the sunroom. Seraphina was staring out the window, looking pale and listless. Nico was on the floor, pushing a toy truck. It was the perfect stage. I swept into the room, a bright, cheerful smile on my face, and sat on the floor with Nico.

"Shall I tell you a story, my little wolf?" I asked, my voice loud enough for Seraphina to hear every word. Nico nodded eagerly.

"Once upon a time," I began, my eyes flicking up to watch Seraphina's reflection in the glass, "there was a great Alpha king. He had a Luna, but her heart was cold and she made the king very unhappy. One day, a beautiful she-wolf, who had always loved the king, came to the castle. The king was happy again! But the cold Luna was jealous."

I paused, letting the words sink in. Seraphina's back was still to me, but I could see her shoulders tense.

"The cold Luna knew the king wanted to have a new family with the beautiful she-wolf. So, she devised a wicked plan." I leaned closer to Nico, my voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "She went to a rogue from the dark woods, and she let him put his pup in her belly. She planned to lie and tell the Alpha king that the baby was his, to trick him into staying with her forever."

That was it. That was the confession.

A jolt of pure, triumphant adrenaline shot through me. I had her. It was true. The fool was pregnant with Damian's child.

My mind, which had been a storm of anxiety, became a landscape of cold, clear, crystalline certainty. The threat was real. And a real threat required a real solution.

I finished my story for Nico, but my thoughts were already far away, spinning a new, much darker tale.
