"Just curious," he said.
The truth was, Tyler couldn't quite put his finger on why.
Maybe, he thought, watching Owen and Sadie might help him see things a bit more clearly in his own life.
Owen let out a sigh and slumped back against the couch, taking a long drink.
"Same as always," Owen said. "Honestly, I can't even figure out what goes on in her head anymore."
"I heard she's been busy with work lately," Tyler said, genuinely surprised.
Owen shook his head, almost laughing. "She was with me for years, always fussing over handbags and shopping sprees. Now all of a sudden, she's thrown herself into her career!"
Tyler shot Owen a look—a little too direct.
Owen looked sheepish for a moment, then cleared his throat and tried to cover. "I mean, it's not all bad. Apparently she's working in luxury goods appraisals now… Guess all those handbags weren't a total waste."
Tyler nodded thoughtfully.
So, what was Emilia up to these days?
It had been twenty-one days now, and he barely knew anything about her life. All he knew were bits and pieces about her and Bella.
Owen seemed to recover from his embarrassment and turned the conversation. "So, what's really going on with you?"
Tyler took a sip of whiskey and told him about what had happened that afternoon.
It clicked for Owen. This wasn't about Vivienne. This was about Emilia—and that little girl.
Owen knew how much Tyler wanted a child. It wasn't surprising, not really.
"You didn't know she was sick. Can't blame yourself for that," Owen said, trying to reassure him. "Just… pay more attention when it comes to her treatment in the future."
From Owen's perspective, this was a kid Tyler had only just met—no blood ties, nothing. But for Tyler, he'd actually done pretty well, all things considered.
After all…
Owen glanced at the empty bottles scattered across the table.
In all their years of friendship, he'd never seen Tyler like this before.
