The car engine roared to life, pulling away from the curb and past Tyler. He lifted his gaze just in time to catch a glimpse of Serena’s masked profile through the tinted window.
The van cruised steadily down the road, with a makeup artist already at work helping Serena remove her stage makeup.
Beneath the mask, her face was bare—only the lower half had been painted for the performance.
Cindy sat scrolling through the latest headlines on her phone, fuming over the online uproar.
“How can people be so shameless?”
“I used to think she was genuinely kind—she’s supposedly terminally ill, and yet she’s out there sharing her story to inspire other patients. But to make up lies like this…”
“Mr. Donovan, Serena, what are we supposed to do now?”
“And what about Mr. Erickson earlier? He’s clearly siding with Vivienne. How should we respond to that?”
Christian wanted to consult Emilia in private, but with Cindy present, he simply gave a vague reassurance. “We’ll handle it,” he said, keeping his tone neutral.
Halfway to their destination, Emilia and Christian got out and switched to a Bentley waiting by the curb.
Once seated in the more discreet car, Emilia finally removed her mask.
“What’s your take on this?” Christian asked, scrolling through the endless stream of updates on his phone.
Ordinarily, a few minor rumors wouldn’t even warrant a response from someone of Serena’s stature. Even if news broke about her dating or getting married, it wouldn’t be a big deal.
But this time the accusations were far more serious—words like “sex-for-favors” and “charity fraud” were splashed across every headline.
The former could be brushed off as gossip or slander. But charity fraud… that was another level.
