Vivienne pulled out a folder and set it on the desk. “I brought all the documents we’ll need,” she said, her voice upbeat.
She brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear and added, “I even put on some makeup. Do I look a bit more lively today?”
The temperature in the executive office was just right, and when Vivienne smiled, she looked radiant—healthier than she had in days. The pallor she’d worn recently was gone, replaced with a hopeful glow.
She was clearly excited.
But…
Whether it was exhaustion or something else, Tyler felt no urge to go down to the courthouse and get a marriage license.
“Let’s do it another day,” he muttered, lowering his eyes to avoid seeing the disappointment on Vivienne’s face.
“I’m really tired today,” he said, rubbing his brow. “And there are a few things we need to prepare before getting married, anyway.”
Vivienne glanced at his unshaven jaw, the weariness written all over him. She knew he was telling the truth, so she didn’t press.
Still, she longed for certainty. If they made it official, she’d finally be Mrs. Erickson.
She could already picture herself flaunting the marriage certificate in front of Emilia, savoring the look of frustration and heartbreak on her rival’s face—the helplessness, the anger, the defeat.
With that thought, Vivienne tried again. “Tyler, I don’t need anything fancy. No ceremonies, no big wedding. You know all I want is to be your wife. That’s all I ask.”
Tyler still wouldn’t meet her gaze.
“I know you’re tired, and it’s been a rough few days,” she went on gently. “I can wait.”
“But Tyler, please don’t make me wait too long. Please, don’t let me down, okay?”
Her words were soft, careful—impossible to ignore.
Tyler could only sigh inwardly.
In the end, he gave a quiet, “Alright.”
That was as much of a promise as she was going to get.
“Then get some rest, Tyler. I won’t bother you anymore.” Vivienne’s smile returned, lighter this time. “How about dinner together tonight?”
He nodded, and with that, Vivienne finally left the office.
