This would be a long, sleepless night.
The internet was ablaze with rumors and speculation. After Emilia returned to her rented apartment, she soaked in a hot bath and then, dressed in her nightgown, stepped out onto the balcony to let the cool night air wash over her.
May’s evenings brought a gentle breeze—just enough to be refreshing, not chilly.
Emilia glanced at her phone and noticed a new message.
[This is Theodore Glenn. Here’s my number. Please save it.]
She could practically picture Theodore Glenn sitting at his desk, carefully typing out the message—such an old-fashioned gesture.
But this wasn’t the message she’d been waiting for.
A little while later, her phone buzzed again.
Chloe was calling.
After hesitating for a moment, Emilia decided to pick up.
“What is it?” she asked.
“Emilia, my brother is sick,” Chloe snapped, her voice sharp with irritation. “He’s in the hospital, all alone. You’re not even going to check on him?”
Emilia frowned slightly. “Didn’t he tell you?”
“Tell me what?” Chloe’s anger only seemed to grow.
Emilia paused. In her mind, she saw Parker Erickson’s face.
“It’s nothing,” she said quietly.
Maybe Tyler needed a few days to tell the Erickson family that their marriage was over.
Parker had always treated her well, even if the marriage itself had failed. Best to let Tyler break the news himself. Still, if he kept stalling, she wouldn’t keep the secret for him forever.
“Emilia, you—”
Before Chloe could finish, Emilia cut her off. “I know he’s sick. That’s all. I have things to do.”
With that, she ended the call.
She saw no reason to be interrogated like this.
When Chloe called again, Emilia just set her number to Do Not Disturb.
