Emilia realized that she and Tyler had never found themselves in a moment like this before.
Maybe it was simply because, back then, there hadn’t been a child in their lives.
On the other side of the room, Theodore was already making plans with Bella.
He looked up at Emilia and asked, “Does this time and place work for you?”
His question snapped her out of her thoughts. Remembering the conversation she had only half-listened to, Emilia nodded.
Bella, already distracted, had wandered over to examine a painting, leaving Emilia and Theodore standing face to face.
It struck Emilia that now there were only three people left in the office.
The whole thing suddenly felt a little odd.
She searched for something to say. “Where’s Joyce?”
“She wasn’t feeling well when I arrived—bad stomach,” Theodore replied. “She asked me to keep an eye on Bella for a bit. She’ll be back soon.”
Emilia glanced at the ever-present security monitor, blinking in thought.
All right, then.
She nodded and continued, “So, Theodore, what brings you here—a visit with friends, or are you feeling under the weather?”
But Theodore only smiled. “I came to see you.”
Emilia’s brows knit together, but she said nothing, simply watching him.
“Are you free for a bit?” Theodore’s voice was gentle, his smile warm. “I brought some things with me. I need to head down to the courtyard for a moment.”
He paused, then added, “We’ll take Bella with us.”
Emilia considered it, then nodded.
If Bella was with them, surely there was nothing to worry about.
“I’ll leave a note for Joyce,” Emilia said, moving to the desk to scribble a quick message.
“Okay,” Theodore replied, lowering his gaze as he watched her write.
…
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the building.
Tyler was still standing where he’d been left, blood steadily trickling down from the corner of his mouth, scattering tiny red drops across the floor at his feet.
Someone passing by spotted him and immediately called for a nurse.
