Theodore faltered, caught off guard.

Emilia met his gaze. “I accept your proposal,” she said. “Let’s give this a try.”

These past days, he’d always kept his distance, never overstepping or making her uncomfortable. He hadn’t pressured her, either.

Emilia squeezed Bella’s hand gently. Bella adored him. The Glenn family’s home was warm and welcoming. Maybe it was time to give herself a chance, too.

“Silly girl.” Theodore smiled, reassuring her. “Don’t worry about any of that. As long as you’re willing to try with me, that’s all that matters.”

Of course he understood her circumstances. Once they were together, he could try even harder; who could say what the future might hold? Even if Bella remained her only child, he didn’t mind. Bella was enough.

She might not love him yet, or be ready to admit it, and they hadn’t made anything official. But the fact that she was willing to let him in at all was a step forward—a good one.

He’d do his best to make her care for him, even if it was just a little.
