Farewell to Love: The CEO's Desperate Chase novel Chapter 40

On the other side of town—

Tyler drove through the night, the wind rattling the trees outside his car, their branches casting restless shadows under the yellow glow of the streetlights.

The weather report had warned of strong winds tonight.

As the clock on his dashboard ticked from 11:59 to midnight, he suddenly slammed on the brakes.

He paused only for a heartbeat, then spun the wheel and sped back toward the hospital.

At this hour, the highway was nearly empty. His Aston Martin tore through the city, engine growling against the silence.

With a final screech, he pulled up outside the hospital entrance. The building blazed with light, even at this late hour. Tyler looked up at it, lips pressed into a thin line.

Pulling out his phone, he found Emilia's number and hit call.

Ring… ring… "We're sorry, the number you have dialed—"

The call cut off abruptly.

He tried again. The call was immediately rejected.

Frustrated, Tyler switched to Joyce's number, only now noticing that she'd tried to reach him earlier, while he was driving Vivienne home. He hadn't answered.

Frowning, he tapped the call button.

Rejected again.

He stared at his phone, thumbs poised to type a message.

But—

As he began to type, he hesitated.

What was he even supposed to say?

Tap, tap.

A knock at the window.

Tyler glanced up to see Felix, dressed in a white coat, standing outside.

Tyler's frown deepened as he lowered the window.

"If you're so taken with Vivienne, then be with her. Whatever happens to Emilia is none of your business."

He met Tyler's glare. "You want to do the right thing? Then let her go."

It had all happened so fast. When the nurse had come out to ask for someone to sign the critical care documents, only Joyce had been waiting in the corridor. Emilia's father was gone, her mother estranged; Tyler should have been next of kin, but he was the one who'd pushed her down the stairs and run off with his mistress.

Even so, Joyce had tried calling him—he hadn't answered.

In the end, Joyce had pulled rank as the hospital director's daughter and signed the paperwork herself, promising to supply the necessary authorization later.

Tyler's face grew more rigid with every word. Felix watched him with cold amusement.

He'd given Tyler a chance. If Tyler had even bothered to come inside and ask about Emilia, Felix would have believed he cared.

But he hadn't.

So Felix decided to spell it out, once and for all.

Tyler slammed the window shut and drove away, face like stone.

The early morning wind whipped at Felix's coat as he watched the Aston Martin disappear around the corner. He shook his head and sighed—quietly, almost to himself—before turning back to the hospital's bright, sleepless halls.
