Theodore’s voice crackled through the walkie-talkie. “Emily, are you alright?”
What he really wanted to ask was whether she wanted to keep going. But he knew Emilia Dennis would never back down so easily.
“I’m fine,” Emilia replied.
More than fine—she was determined to win.
After all, Vivienne Hargrave had just tried to humiliate her in front of everyone. There was no way she’d let that slide.
Still…
Emilia lowered her gaze, uncertainty flickering in her eyes.
She could ignore Vivienne’s latest stunt, but now everyone knew Theodore was pursuing her. Ever since she’d walked out of that bathroom, rumors had started flying—people whispering that Theodore was being played for a fool.
One comment in particular stung:
“Emilia and Tyler Erickson were together for seven years. Tyler’s probably had his way with her a hundred times over. Theodore must be kicking himself now.”
She couldn’t help but worry about how Theodore felt.
“Don’t be silly.” Theodore’s voice was gentle, as if he could hear her thoughts. Footsteps echoed in the background, then he spoke again, “Emily, look up.”
Emilia lifted her head and saw him standing on the glass balcony above, looking right at her.
“Emily, I love you. I love you—no matter what. Being your boyfriend is the thing I’m most grateful for in my life. I’m here, and I always will be.”
Her eyes stung with tears.
Yes, he’d always been there. Through all those years, through everything, he’d never left her side.
Emotion welled up inside her, threatening to overflow, but she managed to keep her composure. She answered softly, “Okay.”
“Stick to your plan,” he told her. “You’re Emilia—you don’t lose.”
A smile broke across her face.
