Joyce stared at the divorce papers in disbelief.
She and Emilia had been close friends for over a decade, and she'd seen firsthand just how head-over-heels Emilia was for Tyler. There was a time when Emilia would have done anything for him—even risked her own life.
When they got married a year ago, Joyce had felt a pang of worry, but she was honestly happy that her best friend had finally gotten what she wanted.
But now…
What happened?
"I don't love him anymore." Before Joyce could even ask, Emilia spoke up.
She looked at Joyce, lips curving into a gentle smile, looking radiant.
For a moment, Joyce was reminded of the Emilia from years ago—the confident Ms. Dennis, back when the Dennis family was still standing strong, before her father passed away, before life had dragged her down.
Seeing that spark return, Joyce finally felt at ease.
"Tyler doesn't know I'm pregnant," Emilia continued. "There's a thirty-day waiting period before the divorce is finalized. I'd rather keep this from him for now, just to make sure nothing unexpected happens."
If either party changed their mind during those thirty days, the application could be withdrawn, and the marriage would remain intact.
That said, Joyce knew Emilia's decision was final.
After taking it all in, Joyce handed Emilia a list of checkups she'd need, then added, "Emily, you'll need to wait a few days before the procedure."
"Is something wrong?" Emilia asked, a little puzzled.
Joyce explained, "You know you have a rare blood type. Just in case, I want to make sure we've got blood ready for you. I've already called the blood bank, but it'll take about a week to get everything set up."
Emilia hesitated, a shadow of sadness flickering in her eyes.
She'd inherited her blood type from her father. She missed him. If only he were still around…
"Okay," Emilia managed, blinking back tears and giving Joyce a brave smile.
"And there are some signs you might miscarry," Joyce added gently. "So be extra careful these next few days."
Joyce's expression softened with concern.

Before she married Tyler, Emilia had been a ghostwriter in the music industry.
Music had always been her passion. Back when her father was alive, she was Ms. Dennis—she could have anything she wanted, including the best teachers.
Life had taken her on a wild ride since then; she'd seen more of the world, and her music had taken on new depth.
Her father never could have imagined that the hobby he'd encouraged would one day become her livelihood.
After a moment's thought, Emilia replied: [Received, thank you.]
The response came instantly: [You deserve it. Honestly, you've written some real hits these past few years. Are you sure you don't want to make a comeback? There's a new show starting soon that would be perfect for you. I've already sent the details to your email. Let me know—I've reserved a special spot for you.]
Emilia checked her inbox. It was a music competition show—not too different from the ones she'd watched before, except this one put a premium on original songs.
She replied: [I'll think about it.]
