Chapter 23
Lily froze in terror as a car barreled straight toward her.
Victor and Benjamin both lunged forward in alarm, desperate to pull Lily away.
“Lily, move!”
Benjamin reached her first, yanking her aside.
But the speeding car clipped them both.
Shielding Lily in his arms, Benjamin tumbled sideways with her.
Lily’s head struck a flowerbed edge while Benjamin took the impact on his leg, his arm scraping raw during the fall.
Ignoring his own pain, Benjamin frantically checked Lily.
Seeing blood oozing from her head as she lay unconscious, he shouted at bystanders, “Call an ambulance!”
Victor rushed over to check on Lily, but Benjamin shoved him away with his last strength.
Benjamin roared at Victor, “Go see what Sophie’s done!”
In that critical moment, Benjamin had recognized Sophie behind the wheel.
Victor turned toward the car, finally spotting Sophie in the driver’s seat.
Sophie’s vehicle had rammed into Benjamin and Lily before crashing into another flowerbed.
Airbags deployed as engine smoke billowed out.
Victor dragged Sophie from the wreckage.
Dazed from her head injury, Sophie barely registered being hauled out.
Victor showed no mercy, shoving her to the pavement.
“How dare you do this!”
“If Lily’s seriously hurt, you’ll pay!”
Wailing sirens pierced the air as ambulances converged.
Lily regained consciousness in a ward.
Staring blankly at the ceiling, she struggled to sit up after a dazed moment.
A nurse rushed to restrain her.
