Liam’s POV

The dial tone rang. Once. Twice. I was close to losing my mind, as long as she didn’t reply.

The voice that I was familiar with suddenly became evident.

Hello?

I couldn’t believe it. Sienna?I blurted out too quickly.

She acknowledged, with a tired tone but still genuine. Yes, I am.Her reply was brief.

For the moment, I remained still and smiled unimpressed. I didn’t think you would take it. I presumed you were still busy.

She mentioned her busy schedule, but admitted to being able to talk for a bit. What’s it, Liam?

I took a deep breath, trying to soothe the beating in my chest. There’s no problem. I was just looking for a little chatter.

At one point, she was silent and then asked quietly. What’s the matter? She inquired.

I mentioned that today was a day when we went to the park with Noah. Soccer, bubble balloons and ice cream were all part of our plans. He laughed all the way, Sienna. He was definitely there and his face was filled with happiness.

With my voice softer, He had that red robot all around. He remained attached to it and placed it next to him during soccer games, fearing losing possession of it.

I heard Sienna take a deep breath during the phone call and whisper her name. Her voice trembled slightly when she said, That’s just like him. The robot could be a mirror image of me.

After eating, I spoke with a firm voice, Sienna, we miss you. When he was having breakfast, I asked him when a new opportunity erupted and if we could come together. His eyes brightened as shivers of fear permeated the

room.

I took a deep breath

We had to stand up separately. Only our breathing allowed us to hear the sound of silence. I could picture her there holding onto her phone tightly, trying to hold it down. We had a quiet time, but it was long and heavy with meaning. I heard a wobbly exhale from the other side, and then he delicately tried not to break.

Sienna muttered, That’s what he said.

I gave a soft yesresponse. When I said that Mommy would come home, he smiled. I haven’t seen a smile like

that since the last time.

A faint, stifled sob came through the line. Perhaps she was lowering her head or keeping my mouth closed to prevent me from hearing her crying. I was aware that Sienna had the ability to handle any situation, but when it came to Noah, her walls always crumbled.

She muttered, Liam, and wondered when she would be truly prepared. Her voice cracked.

There are moments when I worry that I won’t be the ideal mother if I return home. Why? My selfacceptance is still evolving.

Once I paused, I replied softly, If you are not ready yet. Believe me, Noah doesn’t require you to be flawless. He simply needs your presence. For a short while, that is already enough for him.

She inhaled deeply, as if my words had penetrated her. Liam, I really miss you,she whispered. I can’t help but think about him every night. Who smooch his forehead at night if he’s getting enough sleep. I loathe the knowledge that the answer is not in my possession.

My chest tightened painfully. As I shivered, my lower lip was covered in blood. I whispereth that the boy would still take photos of me and then kiss them before sleeping. He would occasionally say something to it, such as Good night, Mommy or hug his red robot tightly.

A faint sob escaped her. The noise is not overwhelming, but it is powerful enough to make me feel alive.

With a breathless count, Sienna exclaimed, I don’t know if I’m still alive in this world.

I gave a firm response, Sienna, will have you back. In my life. In Noah’s. Always.

The words were unplanned, honest and natural. After that, only silence remained. I gazed through the window and felt the cold night air ruffling against my skin, but it didn’t calm me down.

Eventually, she expressed her fear by saying that everything would be different if she returned home.

I am uncertain if the alteration will be advantageous or disadvantageous.

I breathed deeply, shutting my eyes for a moment. Sure, change is always painful. What followed? Still, remaining in the same is a more agonizing task.

There was no response for a prolonged period. Upon hearing her breathing slow down and become more tranquil, she whispered to herself at last. She expressed a tearful smile and acknowledged that she always knows what to say to ease her emotional pain. This was the moment when it hit me as I heard her speaking.

Although she couldn’t see it, I also wore a smile. I still recognize you,I said calmly at the time.

She gave a small, bittersweet chuckle. If you don’t know me deeply enough. I won’t be safe from harm.

If you need to hide, there are safe areas to go.

The afterdeath experience wasn’t awkward this time around the silence was warm and filled with unreserved understanding, Merely two hearts are synchronized across the space.
