From Neglected Wife to CEO’s Obsession novel Chapter 186

I eased the door open just a crack, peeking out to check the hallway. Inside, I was clutching my bathrobe tight, nothing but bare skin underneath, hovering right behind the door—ready to slam it shut if anything felt off.

I took a good look around. No sign of Elliot’s people. But then I heard his voice, calm and clear.

“There’s a phone number on the bag. If you’re missing anything, or need a different size, just call. The company set up a special line just for you.”

Was all this really necessary? This was like calling in a SWAT team just to catch a housefly.

Still, being treated like I actually mattered felt pretty amazing. I couldn’t help the little rush of pride—it made me feel special, plain and simple.

“Thank you, Mr. Swanson,” I said, trying to sound chill as I reached for the shopping bag. The thing looked perfectly ordinary, but it was so heavy I almost twisted my back picking it up.

Once I’d shut the door, I heaved the bag onto the bed and started pulling things out one by one.

First up: a black evening gown, simple but elegant, sparkling with tiny diamonds. The craftsmanship, the fabric, the half-carat real diamonds catching the light—it all screamed high fashion and money. This dress alone was probably worth more than some people make in a year. The world of the rich really was a different planet.

I figured the gown was for tomorrow night’s dinner. Underneath it, I found three more dresses, two thick coats, and even a small, adorable hand warmer.

He really thought of everything. Even my shivering when I’d gotten out of the car hadn’t escaped him.

He was so thoughtful and observant. Whoever ends up with a man like him is seriously lucky.

The dresses were so my style—modest but still cute. The colors—soft blue, silvery gray, fresh green—were exactly what I liked.

Next, I found two little boxes with matching bras and panties for each outfit, plus a set of silky pajamas. At the bottom were two more boxes: one with creamy leather flats, the other with a pair of sparkling high heels that matched the evening dress perfectly.

I picked up the pajamas and was just about to change when someone knocked on my door. At the same time, my phone started buzzing nonstop.

I didn’t have to guess—it had to be Remy. He was probably in his room, listening for any sound from mine. Elliot’s visit must have driven him crazy.

“Avery, is Elliot in your room? Make him leave, please, Avery, don’t do this to me.”
