He cleared his throat in a way that sounded forced. Rodrigo took festett and the others to fight, and then then the was

Caelan started tapping his fingers against his knee in rapid succession, then suddenly stopped and looked at me. It’s late ne The should get some sleep, baby

“Carlan, don’t you think it’s strange?”

“What’s strange?

That my father knows so little about what happened that day.”

His fingers stilled completely, forming a tight fist. “Battlefields are chaotic. That’s normal.”

But they went together… how could he not know how Mom got hurt?”

“Maybe… maybe he was fighting at the time and didn’t notice.”

“Didn’t notice his own mate being attacked?”

“Sabi, don’t overthink this… let the past stay in the past.”

“I want to understand how my mother died. That’s called overthinking?”

His voice grew softer, more soothing. I didn’t mean it like that… I’m just worried about you.”

Worried about what?”

Worried that youre becoming too obsessed with the past, that it’s affecting your present life.”

I want to investigate this I need to find out what really happened back then,”

My eyes blazed with determination I want to find the real killer and get revenge but Me with my own hands,”

He grabbed my hand quickly babi, gure pregnant no

“Violent? I haven’t done anything yet and your altra calling Mi

His words tumbled out in a rush. “I mean it’s bad to the baby this negative solutions.

I frowned. “So you think seeking justice is a negative emotion? My mother cant die unavenged.”

“And I dreamed about her.”

Chapter 203

Caelan’s entire body went rigid.

“I dreamed about how she was killed.”

His breathing became noticeably faster. “Dreams? Those are just dreams…”

“But it felt so real… like she was trying to tell me something.”

“In the dream, I could sense that the killer was someone she knew.”

“Someone she knew?’ His voice pitched higher.

“Yes… not a stranger, not an enemy… but I couldn’t make out the face clearly.

He immediately tried to change the subject. “Sabi, you’ve been under too much stress lately.”

“Stressed?”

“Yes. The pregnancy, hormonal changes… all of that affects sleep patterns and dreams.”

Caelan started unconsciously touching his neck-a nervous habit I’d noticed before.

There was a slight stutter in his speech now.

“So what do you think I should do?”

“Get more rest… don’t think about it so much…”

“But there was one detail that was very clear.

“What detail?” His voice was sharp with alarm.

“The way she was attacked.”

I paused deliberately, watching his reaction.

“Mom was ambushed from behind by the enemy.”

“No, that’s not-

The words escaped before he could stop them. The air in the room turned to ice.

My eyes went wide. “What did you just say?”

He realized his mistake immediately, scrambling to cover. I… I just meant… dreams aren’t always accurate.”

“No.” My voice became dangerously quiet. “You said that’s not right.”

“I… I was just thinking…”

I cut him off. “How do you know it’s not right?”

His mouth opened and closed silently. No words came out.

Chapter 203

“Caelan. My tone was deadly serious now. Do you know something about what happened back then?”

Silence stretched between us like a chasm.

“You know how my mother really died, don’t you?

Still nothing but silence.

I reached for my phone on the nightstand, my fingers swiping quickly across the screen.

“Darrell called me tonight. He told me some things about Mom’s death… some truths.”

“Then he sent me an email.”

I turned the phone screen toward him. “I think you should see this.”

The moment Caelan’s eyes focused on the email displayed on my screen, his pupils contracted sharply, like he was staring at something horrifying.

Minutes later, the phone slipped from Caelan’s fingers, landing with a soft thud on the white bed sheets.

His face drained of all color instantly. Not just pale-completely bloodless, like someone had opened his veins and let everything flow out. The transformation was so sudden and complete that for a moment I wondered if he was having some kind of medical

emergency.

His breathing became shallow and quick. I watched his throat work as he swallowed hard, once, twice, three times.

For what felt like an eternity, neither of us moved. The only sound was the steady tick-tick-tick of the clock on our bedroom wall.

Then something shifted in his expression. His eyes snapped to mine with sudden alertness, as if he’d just realized how much his reaction had given away. His hands shot out, grasping mine with desperate urgency.

His palms were ice cold. Clammy with sweat.

“Sabi…” His voice came out as a hoarse rasp. “Please let me explain everything,”

He sounded like a drowning man reaching for the last rope.

I nodded.

Caelan released my hands and buried his face in his palms. His shoulders sagged forward as he leaned his elbows on his knees.

“The situation back then was much more complicated than what that email says.”

I waited.

“I actually didn’t know it was Melissa who launched the attack. I only found out just now, reading this email.” He lifted his head to look at me. “I was training alone in the border region when I heard the sounds of fighting. I rushed to the scene immediately.”

His eyes searched mine desperately. “I didn’t hesitate, Sabi. I joined the battle right away.”

Pain flashed across his features. “All I could think was that innocent people couldn’t be allowed to get hurt.”

“During the most intense fighting, I saw Isabella being attacked by three or four Rogues.”

Chapter 203

“She was already wounded and bleeding, but she kept fighting with everything she had.”

“When I saw her fall…” He stopped.

“I threw myself into the fight without thinking. I killed every single Rogue that was surrounding her.”

Caelan’s hands clenched into tight fists. “She was unconscious by then, badly injured.”
