Chapter 23
The trees outside the window rustled in the wind as Howard drove past them. The weather report had announced that it would be windy that night. The shadows of the trees stretched long and far under the dim streetlights.
He slammed his foot on the brake suddenly when the clock turned from 11:59 pm to 12:00 am. He only stopped for a moment before he immediately turned the car around and drove toward the hospital.
There weren’t many cars on the road in the wee hours of the morning, so Howard could push the Aston Martin to go as fast as possible. He slammed his foot once more on the brake when he arrived at the entrance of the hospital.
Howard looked up at the building that was still completely lit up despite the late hour. He pursed his lips before retrieving his phone and dialing Megan’s number.
“We’re sorry. The number you’re calling-”
The call only lasted briefly before the line went dead. When he tried calling her again, the call was once again disconnected.
Howard decided to call Selena instead. He was about to dial her number when he realized that Selena had called him when he was sending Alyssa back home, but he had missed her call. He frowned before tapping the “call” button, but the line went dead.
He looked at his phone and decided to send a message instead, but his fingers hesitated over the keyboard. He didn’t know how to ask the questions he wanted to know the answers to.
Suddenly, he heard a knock on his car window. He looked up and saw Shaun standing next to the car, dressed in a white coat. Frowning, Howard rolled the window down.
Shaun waved the phone he was holding at him. “You should visit Megan yourself if you want to know how she’s doing. Stop calling her.”
Howard narrowed his eyes. “I’m her husband.”
Shaun barked out a laugh before saying, “So, you do remember that you’re her husband. But according to what Lena told me, you’re not going to be her husband for much longer.”
Howard curled his fingers into tight fists. He stared at Shaun, who was wearing a mocking expression, and said, “That’s none of your business.”
“Of course, it’s my business.” Shaun leaned over slightly, carrying himself with a frivolous but dangerous demeanor. “Lena told me that you pushed Megan down the stairs because of the fight that she started, so she’s going to give me to her as compensation.”
Shaun smiled before continuing, “I think it’s a great idea.”
“Shaun Lowe!” Howard hissed, clenching his fists tighter.
Shaun didn’t say a word. He simply stood in place and watched Howard quietly.
A long time passed before Howard spoke again. “Did Megan put you up to this?”
Since her little act with Selena had been exposed, she had looked for Shaun instead? Did she already switch tactics?
The smile on Shaun’s face slowly faded away as he pinned Howard with an icy stare. “Are you angry? Howard, you need to understand that you’re not the only man in Acreport. I watched her grow up, so I know exactly how charming she can be.
“If you like Alyssa, then you should just be with her. You shouldn’t concern yourself with what’s going on with Megan.”
Shaun’s tone was resolute when he said, “The only thing you can do now, Howard, is to let her go.”
