Chapter 162

I stared at him. At the monster the world had made out of him. My monster. My mate. And for the first time in what felt like forever, I felt

hope.

I don’t want to be a queen,I whispered.

Good,he said, pulling me into his arms. Then let’s be fugitives.

And just like that, the first crack appeared in the empire of blood and lies.

Varek POV

I walked a razor wire, and every step tasted like blood. Lucien watched everything. Vaela even more so. That smile of hers, coiled and cold and hungry, knew too much.

I swore she was waiting for me to fuck up.

So I didn’t. I played the part. Loyal. Obedient. Controlled. But every second of every goddamn day, my anxiety clawed at my insides. And Soria? Fuck. She was the only light left in this abyss. The only thing keeping me from snapping Lucien’s spine like a twig and setting fire to this whole damn place.

But we had to wait. We had to be smart. Calculated. One wrong move and we were deador worseturned into something beyond death.

So I bided my time. I mapped the halls. I memorized patrols. I tracked the rotation of the guards and blood slaves. I took note of which mages Lucien trusted and which ones grumbled under their breath when they thought he wasn’t listening. I even started flattering Vaelajust enough to keep her off our scent.

But every night when the doors closed, when it was just me and SoriaI couldn’t keep the mask on. Not with her. Not when her scent drove me insane and her eyes begged for something real. Something only I could give.

She was curled up on the bed then, her hair loose, her lips flushed from biting them all day. I knew that look. The ache in her chest mirrored my own.

You’re doing good,I whispered, crossing the room.

You’re strong.

She looked up at me, and her voice was a fucking weapon. Soft. Broken and hopeful. Tell me we’ll get out.

I knelt beside her, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. We will, I swear it.

And maybe I shouldn’t have kissed her, Maybe it was reckless, maybe we should have been focused, maybe I was playing with fireBut I

couldn’t not kiss her.

So I did.

And gods help me, when her hands curled into my shirt and she climbed into my lap, every ounce of control I’d been clinging to snapped.

Chapter 162

:

She was all heat and hunger and need. Our bond pulsed like a second heartbeat, demanding we complete it. Claim it.

Soria,I growled, pressing my forehead to hers, breathing her in like she was oxygen. Once we seal this, it’s forever.

I know, she whispered. And I want it. I want you. Not this place. Not them. Just you.

I lifted her then, carried her to the bed, and laid her down like she was the last soft thing in this brutal world. My hands trembled as they slid down her sides, tracing the curve of her hips, the dip of her waist, feeling the shiver that rippled through her skin under my touch.
