I murmured to myself as I watched the man who had gone utterly still. I had killed someone today.

I had never taken a life before.

But the man’s face seemed oddly at peace. The pain and anguish that had been lingering on his face was

gone.

And he was staring up at the sky. There was hope in his eyes.

I was not sure how to feel about it.

The blood, the chaos and how easy it was to be alive one moment and stop breathing the next.

The dagger was slick with blood, droplets of red trickling down from the tip.

I stared at the face for a long time as the surrounding death and mayhem went quiet all around me.

Had I gone numb to death and blood in the matter of a few hours? I stood there, standing stupidly, clutching the dagger until I heard something behind me.

Hey you, what are you doing standing there?

I heard someone but my mind couldn’t focus on action, on moving. It was frozen in place, my body rooted to the spot.

Come here and help us, you twat

The voice shouted again, louder and angrier this time..

My brain screamed at me to move, to do something. And my legs finally moved as I tore my gaze away from the dead man.

And there was a tall and burly man, dressed in armor, and shaking his bald head at me, standing a few feet away from me.

What are you even looking at?He asked me and I vaguely pointed my finger at the dead man.

The bald man took a peek behind me and asked.

You knew him?

I shook my head.

What? Seeing all this blood has you tongue tied?He asked and laughed as if he had cracked some silly joke.

He took a step forward and surveyed the surrounding area, looking at all the dead bodies.

Well, you look too thin and frail to be wielding any weapon. But you killed that man with that sword?

He asked again and I nodded.

Good. One less useless fella for me to get rid of. King Martin doesn’t need weaklings and neither do I in my

army.

He said and laughed again.

King Martin.

My Army.

That is when I looked at him again clearly this time. And I recalled why he looked and sounded so familiar.

He was the one Martin had assigned as the new royal commander of Elorin. What was his name again?

Marty? Barty?

My heart skipped a beat, wondering if the King had not survived this time despite the Crone and Elder Amara’s best efforts.

Barty took a step closer and I saw some soldier scream and try to lunge at him from the other end.

Barty kept walking towards me and stuck his hand out to the left just when the enemy soldier was about to ram his weapon inside his skull.

The enemy soldier made a choking noise and blood gurgled out of his mouth as Barty yanked the blade out of his chest and didn’t even bother looking at the man who slumped down on the ground.

All the while he kept watching me intently.

Now that I think of it, I don’t remember recruiting any skinny soldier in any of my battalions. At least, not recently.”

He said, kicking a stray rock away from him and waiting for an answer. And that is when I realized I couldn’t just stand there like an idiot for long.

Barty had found me in a moment of shock and I had to do something fast to avoid getting any more of his attention.

But how?

Luckily, a scream tore behind him and he turned to look at the source of the noise.

I didn’t wait to waste even a second and ran away, as fast as my limping legs could carry me.

So what do you think, you could take those men down there you twat?I heard Barry guffaw and then suddenly go silent to not see me around.

Where the hell did you go?He asked and I peeked through my hiding place, the nearest pile of dead bodies
