I Quit Being a Stepmother (Cypress Gem) novel Chapter 115

Chapter 115

Arielle held on to Adrian and kept her distance from Carter.

Carter crouched and said, Tell me the truth. Did Lauren really hit you? Say it again for me.

If the kids were lying, their story would get mixed up somewhere. There would always be clues.

Rhea reassured them, saying, It’s fine. Just tell your dad everything. Say it exactly as it happened, just like I taught you.

Carter glanced at her when he heard those words. She had always taught the kids not to lie and to tell the truth, no matter what.

Arielle gathered her courage. Adrian and I were writing, and she came in talking about moving to some big house and starting a new life. We asked about Mom, and she glared at us.

Adrian added, Her eyes were really, really mean. It was scary!

Adrian got scared and gave her a little push, and she hit him back really hard on the back. She even called us ungrateful brats.

Arielle frowned. That’s exactly what happened. She’s the one lying. We never called her a witch. She’s always saying that we’re her life, but she actually framed us.

At her age, Arielle just found it ridiculous. She couldn’t believe an adult could lie like that.

Carter’s mind wandered.

The kids had told the same story twice now, in the exact same order. This showed that they weren’t lying.

Maybe he really had wronged them, and that was why they had gotten so upset that they ran away to

Rhea.

Rhea looked at him. Carter, you’re their only dad. If you don’t believe them, who else can they turn to for protection? If you won’t trust them, how would they ever listen to you?

Carter’s expression darkened. It seemed that Lauren really had hit Adrian.

Arielle’s eyes went red. Dad, we don’t like her. But Mom told us to try to accept her. The problem is that she doesn’t like us at all. The way she acts when you’re around isn’t how she is when you’re not.

Adrian nodded hard. When you’re not here, she never smiles. She’s like those bad women in cartoons.

Chapter 115

Kids could always sense if someone liked them or not, and they were never wrong.

Carter’s expression grew increasingly darker. He didn’t want to believe it.

After all, these were Lauren’s kids. How could she be one person in front of him and another behind

his back?

He didn’t want to think that she was that kind of person. Perhaps there was some misunderstanding.

However, it seemed that Lauren really was in the wrong in this case.

A conflict is one thing, but the kids said Lauren framed them. She said that they called her a witch. Isn’t that vile? That was what Rhea couldn’t tolerate.

Carter straightened up and said, I’ll handle it.Then he looked at Rhea. We’re not divorced yet. Maybe you should think about whether it’s appropriate to be living with another man.

Dad, this is our uncle.Arielle clung to George.

Uncle?
