As for whether or not Lauren had been sullied, Carter needed to investigate that in secret.

Lauren suddenly ran to him and bent down to throw her arms around him. “Thank you, Carter! Thank you!”

He was instinctively repulsed, and flickers of disgust crossed his eyes. However, he held back and tried to reason with himself. He reminded himself that Lauren was a victim in this and that he had to

treat her better than this.

“You’re not in great health, so you should hurry home and rest. Grandma and I will start packing now.” She dried her tears, her smile as gentle as always.

Carter had no intention of lingering. “Alright. I’ll pick you up tomorrow.”

“Okay!”

Lauren personally saw him to his car and watched him leave before her smile faded.

“You’re something else, Lauren! You really got him to come to you!” Chloe was proud of her.

Lauren was no longer smiling. “That’s only because of the connections that my parents left behind before they passed.”

“Look, don’t be too worried about this. You just need to figure out a way to stay with him—and maybe have another child together. He’ll fall for you again and marry you! Then, you’ll be the true Mrs. Jamison, and in Draventh, too!” Chloe beamed.

Lauren sat, looking a little absent–minded. “Grandma, you’re wrong.”

“How so?”

“Love is the most worthless thing to a man. I’ve never wanted Carter to love me. I want him to rely on me. Love fades, but dependence and habits don’t change easily.” Lauren stared at the floor and gnashed her teeth.

She thought that it would be good to move to a new place. Maybe she could finally take Rhea’s place

once she was out of her shadow!

Early the next morning, a convoy from Colburn rolled into Draventh.

Even if the Jamison family wasn’t what it once was, they were still better off than ordinary families. Carter could still afford a proper, impressive home.

Marcus‘ words reverberated in Carter’s mind. The more he looked at Lauren, the more he felt that she had to be suffering inside. She’d been through so much and had gotten into such a mess to help him, yet he’d scorned her the night before.

He found himself despicable.

As his guilt intensified, he spoke in a tone that suggested a desire to make amends. “Lauren, I bought this place just for you. It’s in your name. I’ve hired 20 maids, and they’ll focus on caring for you and Mrs. Thayer Senior. As for your clothes and accessories, you can buy anything you want with this card.”

Carter had thought things through overnight. He decided that Peter was wrong about Lauren. She wasn’t the one who had brought him misfortune. Instead, she was the one who would remain steadfast by his side forever. Why else would Marcus have shown up?

In just a day, Marcus had secured a factory location, and construction would begin soon. Carter was confident that it would take less than half a month for Jamison Group to rise again!

Without Lauren, none of this would have happened. Carter had no idea how long it would take him to move Jamison Group’s operations to Draventh’s business hub, if not for her.

He had to thank Lauren for everything she’d done for him and be grateful for the help he’d received.

Lauren’s jaw dropped, and she stared at Carter in disbelief. “You… You bought it in my name?”

“Yeah.”

“You didn’t need to! I would’ve been happy enough to have a roof over my head. And this bank card- keep it for the kids!” She tried to turn down his gifts.
