A long time passed.

Scarlett couldn’t hold back any longer. “Ms. Thayer, you can’t just let Rhea stay here like this. Look at her! She’s practically trying to seduce Mr. Jamison! Women like that need a good scolding to learn their lesson!”

Lauren’s mind spun with a hundred wild scenarios, terrified that something might happen between

Carter and Rhea.

If that happened, she wouldn’t even be able to return to Colburn. Everyone would probably laugh at

her.

The “happy moment” in the kids‘ room that Scarlett mentioned wasn’t something she saw with her own eyes. After all, she hadn’t gone inside and could only vaguely hear some sounds from outside

the door.

She had mistaken the sounds from the cartoon, thinking the family of four was having a good time

together.

Lauren had barely slept a wink all night. The next morning, she supported her leg, which was aching and numb, and stepped out of the room with her cane in hand.

As she looked up toward the second floor, her eyes turned bloodshot.

“Ms. Thayer?”

Scarlett had gotten up early, as she was worried about Lauren’s mood.

“Has Carter gone back to his room?”

Scarlett guessed, “I saw Mr. Jamison’s bedroom door closed earlier. He should be resting by now.”

Lauren nodded, then beckoned Scarlett over.

Scarlett leaned in to listen. After a moment, she turned and walked away.

At 7:40 am, Scarlett, mop in hand, was cleaning the second–floor floor while chatting casually with

Chloe.

“People really need some shame. If someone clearly doesn’t love you anymore, why force yourself into their life? Why not just let them live in peace with their family?”

Chloe, who was seated, glared toward the kids‘ room. She echoed loudly, “Exactly. Society’s morals nowadays have all been ruined by these shameless women!”

“Some people just have to shove their way in to take care of other people’s kids. Such a bitch! Can’t they have their own? Or they don’t know how? It’s just ridiculous!”

Scarlett dragged the mop across the floor with force. As she spoke, she glanced at the kids‘ room.

Lauren listened from around the corner of the staircase.

Scarlett kept muttering for nearly 20 minutes. By the time it approached 8:00 am, Lauren was both anxious and furious.

How could Rhea still not come out after so long? Did she really have no shame? Did she plan to stay here all day?

From across the hall, Lauren shot Scarlett a look.

Scarlett immediately dropped the mop and stormed to the kids‘ room. She raised her hand and knocked hard on the door.

“Sweeties, wake up! No more sleeping in!” Scarlett’s voice rang through the hallway.
