The next day, Lauren had been sitting at her vanity since noon, getting ready. Just picking out clothes had taken her over an hour.
“These outfits are too cheap. They don’t look luxurious enough.” Lauren sighed.
Scarlett said, “Ms. Thayer, you’re beautiful. The clothes are just to complement you.”
“Have the things I ordered arrived yet?”
Carter had given her ten million dollars, and she had spent only a fraction picking out a scarf for Elena. The rest had mostly gone into shopping for herself.
“One’s here!” Scarlett suddenly remembered and ran to the storage room to fetch it.
Lauren opened the box. “My coat!”
She had wanted this coat for over a year but never bought it. Now, with Carter’s money, she finally could.
It cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“I’m wearing this one,” Lauren said, beaming.
By evening, Lauren was waiting for Carter to come pick her up.
“Ms. Thayer, why isn’t the beef from the shopping list in the fridge?” Devan asked after scanning the list for a long moment.
“Didn’t you buy it?” Lauren looked at Scarlett, puzzled.
Scarlett shook her head. “It said 100 pounds, which seemed excessive. I bought just a little, and you used it for lunch with Ms. Austin yesterday.”
“So be it,” Lauren said.
Devan pressed, “But that’s for Ms. Arielle and Mr. Adrian. The nutritionist said they must have it every day. Over time, it helps improve their health.”
Lauren frowned. “They’ve been weak for ages. What difference does beef make? They’ll still be sickly. If there’s no beef, they can eat something else.”
“But they like beef,” Devan said.
Lauren’s patience snapped. “If they won’t eat anything else, let them go hungry. They’re totally spoiled by staff like you.”

Devan realized that he wouldn’t win this argument and fell silent.
He believed that a woman like this didn’t deserve to be called a mother.

Stepping out of the villa, Lauren didn’t look cheerful. “If I’d known it would be like this, I shouldn’t have had children. They’re such a handful.”
Suddenly, a thought crossed her mind, and she touched her stomach.
If she had another child, she would raise it to be kind and considerate.
Carter’s car arrived quickly.
Wearing high heels, Lauren managed to climb into the car with some difficulty.
“Your ankle’s not healed yet. Why did you wear heels?” Carter asked.
Lauren smiled softly. “A little pain won’t hurt. I can’t be rude.”
As the car drove on, her face stayed bright.
“If this really strengthens our connection with the Austin family, it’s all thanks to you, Lauren,” Carter said, holding her hand.
Lauren’s eyes glimmered red. “It’s my honor to walk with you through the hardest times.”
“Thank you, Lauren. I won’t let you down.”
40 minutes later, they arrived at the address Elena had given them. Before entering, Lauren paused and asked, “Help me take a look. Do I look okay?”
Carter smiled. “You look beautiful.”
