“Lauren, I think… I don’t want to keep this baby for now,” Carter said.

Lauren’s mind went blank, and her smile froze. “W–What?”

“There’s no official relationship between us. The baby would be born without a status. And I have to deal with the Ravelles, so I can’t acknowledge him as mine. That would only make things unfair for him. So… I think it’s best to have the abortion procedure now. If the future allows, we can try again

later.”

Carter continued, “Lauren, I know this could impact your health. But I just worry that if your cancer comes back and you forgo treatment for the baby, it would be too much of a shame. Also, this is a crucial time for me. It’s better not to create extra complications.”

Lauren instinctively retorted, “My cancer won’t come back!”

Carter narrowed his eyes.

“What?”

Panic rising, Lauren hurriedly explained, “I mean… I believe that this baby is my lucky star. He’ll protect me. Carter, as I said before, I won’t interfere with your life, and I absolutely won’t let the Ravelles know.”

Carter actually wanted her to terminate the pregnancy. How could he?

Carter tried reasoning with her patiently. “If the Ravelles find out, neither of us will gain anything. Don’t worry. We can always have another baby.”

Lauren’s refusal to consider his position irritated him. She was usually so pragmatic. So, why was she being so stubborn this time?

“But I… I don’t want to… I can’t give him up.” Lauren stepped back.

Carter’s patience was running out. “I said that we’ll have another baby once I succeed. Can’t you think about the child as a mother? How would people see him if he were born out of wedlock without a father?”

“I’d rather give up my life to keep him. Carter, you…” Lauren’s tears fell.

She couldn’t help but suspect that the Ravelles had pressured Carter. But she was hidden away here. How could they possibly know?

“Carter, did the Ravelles catch wind of some rumor?” Lauren asked cautiously. “I told Holly to keep this a secret. The hospital has no record of my tests. So, how could anyone know?”

Lauren watched his expression closely. “Carter, if the Ravelles really know about this, how did they find out? Even with all their influence, they couldn’t just check here for no reason. Does Peter know that I was pregnant?”
