Chapter 430
Louie was surprised. “You didn’t know? When Mr. George’s older brother had that accident, Mr. George was supposed to go with him. But he went to pick you up instead. It was fortunate that he didn’t. Otherwise, it would’ve been two lives lost that day.”
Rhea fell silent. She could already imagine what must be running through Cynthia’s mind.
Kate knew exactly how to exploit Cynthia’s guilt over Gerard.
Rhea figured that Cynthia must believe that she was the root cause of it all. Perhaps not entirely the cause, but still partly to blame.
Rhea thought that Kate was truly ruthless.
“Thank you, Mr. Scott,” Rhea said.
“No need for thanks. I’d do anything for you, no questions asked.” Louie spoke with the kind of devotion one reserved for a savior.
“Keep an eye out. If Carter tries to return to Colburn, I want to know ahead of time.”
Louie assured her, “Don’t worry. He won’t have a place in Colburn anymore.”
When George stepped into the study, he saw Rhea standing by the window, a bright smile lighting her face as she spoke on the phone.
He didn’t interrupt. He simply walked up behind her, slipped an arm around her waist, and brushed his lips against her ear.
By then, she had ended the call. Tilting her head, she couldn’t see his face but could catch the
familiar scent that clung to him.
She sensed that he must be feeling very troubled, caught between her and Cynthia.
“Have you had dinner yet?” Rhea asked softly.
“No. I’m not hungry.”
“Come on, eat a little with me.”
It wasn’t really about the food. She just wanted an excuse to pour him a drink and help him forget whatever was weighing on his mind.
Rhea leaned on the armrest, her eyes sparkling. Her voice carried a hint of lazy drawl as she asked, Has work been busy lately?”
George’s eyes stayed locked on hers. “Not really.”

They drank together, their conversation drifting from one topic to another. Before long, it was past midnight.
George had never spent the night there before. And that night, he was ready to leave, as usual.
“George.”
He stopped at the door and turned. “Yeah?”
Rhea leaned back in her chair and tipped her head back. Her voice was slow and deliberate. “Why don’t you stay?”
She could tell that his mood was heavy.
George’s heart slammed in his chest. They both knew what staying meant.
“You want me to?” George looked at her.
Rhea smiled. “It depends on whether you want to.”
After a while, in the master bedroom, George held her close as they sank into the softness of the bed.
Her eyes shimmered as her cool fingers traced his cheek. “I don’t like it when you frown.”
Every nerve in George’s chest tightened.
“Don’t let me be the reason you feel torn,” she whispered. “When you love someone, all you can do is give it your best. Everyone has their own responsibilities, and I understand whatever you choose to do.”
