When word got out about Lauren's incident, Heidi and Rhea, as the translation team leader and person in charge of the trip, respectively, arrived at the local hospital half an hour later.

Lauren lay facedown on the bed, groaning dramatically. "Murder… I'm gonna sue her for murder…"

Carter stood to the side, his face devoid of emotion. "Yeah, yeah, go ahead. Can you quiet down already?"

Lauren was in full-on manic mode. "Try getting hurt and see how you feel, you heartless jerk! You're just being like this because you don't feel the pain!"

Carter dug his ear, took a step back, and shut up.

Kate frowned. "I wasn't trying to murder you. It was you who—"

Lauren, stuck in her prone position, couldn't see Kate and was livid. She snapped, "Carter, turn this bed around!"

For some reason, Carter found himself listening to her. He adjusted the movable bed so it faced Kate.

Lauren struggled to lift her head, finally locking eyes with Kate's infuriating face. How was she supposed to chew someone out without seeing them? It wasn't satisfying!

She sucked in a breath and unleashed her wrath. "You made me slam into that trash can, and I'm now at risk of paralysis! I've got no parents, no husband, no kids, no friends, and no money—I have nothing! If I end up paralyzed, I'm as good as dead! And you are the one who'll have killed me!"

Instead of feeling guilty, Kate laughed. Then, mimicking Lauren's tone, she fired back. "You're pretty self-aware, aren't you? You have no parents because you're cursed, no husband because you're not wife material, no kids because you're morally bankrupt, and no friends because you're a terrible person! You only have yourself to blame for this."

The words had barely left her mouth when the hospital room door swung open. Several pairs of eyes met Kate's, and her breath hitched.

Rhea and Heidi stood in the doorway, and while Kate wasn't afraid of them, she couldn't understand why Damian was with them.

The things she'd just said… He must've heard her, right?
