Chapter 4
Nathan rushed to my side, panic in his eyes, and helped me to my feet. “Ms. Hawthorne, your phone was off. I knew something was wrong and came right away.”
“The security team’s on route–ten minutes tops.”
His words eased my fear slightly. My private security team was trained to international special forces standards. They were trained like mercenaries. Every one of them was elite.
Vanessa smirked at Nathan. “This your husband? All suited up like a Wall Street wannabe. If he hadn’t shown up, I’d have wondered whose bastard you’re carrying.”
I ignored her, gripping Nathan’s hand tightly. “My water broke. Get me to another hospital–now.”
As Nathan supported me to leave, Vanessa stepped forward, blocking our path. “Did I say you could go?”
She glanced at the security guards. “What, are you all dead? Grab them. Let these two slip away, and I’ll make sure you’re blacklisted from every hospital in the state.”
At her command, several guards charged. Nathan was slammed to the floor, pinned down. Two others seized my arms, locking me in place.
Vanessa sauntered over, snatching a stun baton from a guard. She jabbed it into my knee. A jolt shot through me, and I collapsed with a thud, knees hitting the cold floor.
She loomed over me, slapping my face hard. “Weren’t you all talk a minute ago? Where’s that big mouth now? All out of lies?”
“Grovel. Give me a hundred apologies, and maybe I’ll let you off easy. How’s that?”
I glared up at her smug face, then lunged, ramming my head into her stomach. “Grovel? Let’s see if you’re worth it.”
Vanessa stumbled back, clutching her abdomen, her face contorted with fury. “You little nobody, you dare touch me? This is the future heir of the Sterling legacy! If something happens to him, you wouldn’t be able to pay the price in ten lifetimes.”
She raised the stun baton, aiming for my stomach with a vicious swing. “You chose the hard way. Fine by me. Now I’ll teach you your place.”
A surge of electricity hit, and blinding pain ripped through my abdomen. “Blood… so much blood,” someone gasped.
I forced my eyes downward, my white Bellamore maternity dress now stained crimson. “My baby,” I whispered, voice breaking. Vanessa sneered, “People like you don’t deserve kids. I’m doing you a favor.”
“I’ll make you pay,” I hissed.
With my last shred of strength, I sank my teeth into her hand. She yelped, smashing the baton across my head. “You bit me? You’re done for.”
