Nadine clenched her jaw so tight that her teeth ground together, filled with bitter hate.

“You don’t believe me? Without me, no one in this city could help you win your case.”

She let out a sharp scoff and hung up the call.

Zack stared at the phone, the beeping still ringing in his ears.

His date glanced at him curiously. Zack straightened his back, pretending to be angry. With a loud smack, he threw the phone onto the couch. “Who does this bitch think she is? Tess spent a year in jail; she still hasn’t gotten anywhere with Mr. Lock. And now Nadine acts like she’s Mrs. Lock, as if she could control everything with a snap of her fingers!”

“Exactly! Don’t let her upset you.”

“That bitch is nothing but a pretty face with no brains. You don’t need to take her seriously.”

The women around him swayed their hips and poured more drinks into his glass.

Zack’s face turned red with alcohol as he slapped his bloated stomach and shouted, “I’m not about to waste my time arguing with a woman.”

The women giggled and showered him with flattery.

Soon, Zack was too drunk to stay upright. He collapsed onto the couch, the room spinning wildly around him. But even in his drunken haze, his mind kept racing.

Nadine had sounded so sure of herself. Could she really have found a way?

He’d fought plenty of lawsuits before, and he knew enough to tell that against Nexus, his chances were slim to none. So why was Nadine so confident?

His face twisted with doubt–then he blacked out.

Meanwhile, Tess was woken up by a loud noise.

A blindfold pressed against her eyes, leaving her in total darkness. She could only rely on the sounds to guess where she was. The space felt huge and empty, with eerie echoes bouncing off the walls.

She tried to remember the noise she had heard earlier.

It had sounded like metal pipes rolling across a concrete floor.

Metal pipes and concrete … could it be a warehouse in Aetheris? She was lost.

Before she could think further, footsteps and voices drew closer.

“Still out cold?”

“Maybe the drug was too strong.”

“Doesn’t matter. If she won’t wake up, we’ll splash her.”

Before she could react, a bucket of cold water crashed over her head.

“Argghh-!”

She gasped, shivering as icy water soaked through her clothes and stung her skin.

“Well, well. So you were awake all along. Just pretending, huh?”

That cruel laugh drew closer, and in the pitch black Tess felt a hand clamp tight on her chin.

She had no strength to fight back. Maybe she had been unconscious too long, because even her attempts to struggle felt weak and useless.

But to him, every weak move she made only fueled his twisted sense of control.

“Finn’s woman,” he sneered. “Sure, he doesn’t care much about you, but you’re still not like the others.”

He let out a crooked laugh, his tone mocking and lecherous, as his gaze brushed across Tess’s face with a disturbing gleam.

Even though Tess couldn’t see him, her skin crawled and her stomach turned.

Tess forced herself to stay calm. Her voice was steady, sharp as ice cutting through the dark. “If you know I’m Finn’s wife, then you should know who he is and what he’s capable of.”
