Kit finally lost his patience. He drove his boot hard into Tess’s stomach. “You still think you’re some big–shot lawyer now?” he sneered.

His voice was full of scorn. He even ground his heel against her, determined to crush her pride.

The man with the low voice stood to the side. He frowned at Kit’s brutality but didn’t stop him. Instead, his eyes fixed on Tess, watching every change in her expression.

Kit didn’t hold back.

Tess’s soft stomach slammed hard against something firmly. The pressure ground into her fragile skin, cutting like a knife digging in and out–only worse, more brutal.

Her face went white. She clenched her teeth, refusing to cry out, but a few muffled whimpers still slipped past her lips.

Seeing her twisted in pain, Kit’s cruel grin grew wider. His eyes glinted with delight.

“Tess, you and Steven are close. All you have to do is make him admit in court that he stole the patent from Zack during the second trial with Nexus. Do that, and I’ll have them let you go.”

Her whole body froze. A chill spread from her spine through every limb.

So that was their plan!

Not long ago, someone had secretly helped her and Tommy present powerful evidence. It quickly turned public opinion and brought huge attention to the case. Nexus was almost certain to win the upcoming trial.

But with defeat looming, they actually targeted her, hoping to change the outcome.

Tess let out a cold, mocking smile.

She wasn’t scared. That reaction infuriated the man with the low voice.

He suddenly shoved Kit aside, crouched down, and grabbed Tess’s face in his large hand. “What are you laughing at?!”

His hand felt the smoothness of her skin, and his eyes flickered before he pressed down

harder.

“No wonder Finn doesn’t want anything to do with you,” Kit sneered, covering his mouth in fake shock. His voice was sharp and cutting. “You’re nothing but a scarred–up freak!”

Tess’s eyes trembled for a moment, but she pressed her tongue hard against the roof of her mouth and forced her face to stay calm.

The low–voiced man’s eyes swept over the scar on Tess’s face. For a moment, regret flickered there.

Such a beautiful face–what a waste.

But he quickly looked away.

“We’ve already sent Steven an email,” he said with a light smile.

He forced Tess to lift her chin toward him. “I wonder–are you more important to him or

Nexus?”

His words sharpened at the end, making her heart pound.

Tess froze in shock.

How could these people be so arrogant?

“Nexus is his life’s work. I’m just a nobody. Don’t even think about it.”

Tess fought to steady the storm inside her, refusing to let even a hint of weakness show on her face.

“Is that so?” He chuckled low, the sound rumbling like thunder in her ear. “If we can’t gamble on friendship, then we’ll gamble on human nature.”

Tess’s lips moved, repeating the words in confusion.

But before she could react, his grip vanished from her face. Relief didn’t last. In the next instant, a rough hand clamped down on her throat.
