He slapped Tess hard across the face. The sharp slapping sound was loud and embarassing.
Tess bit down hard on her lip. She could feel the bitter taste of embarassment in her throat.
Noticing the sudden shift in her emotions, the man stood and glared down at her. “Keep going.”
He waved his hand. The burly man who had been waiting too long lunged forward like a starving wolf.
Tess shut her eyes in despair. Tears spilled down without warning.
Layla, I’m sorry.
I won’t be there to watch you grow up.
She bit her lip until it hurt, determined not to make a sound.
It felt like a hand was forcing her head underwater.
She couldn’t breathe.
For a fleeting second, she thought of if she bit down on her tongue and ended things. Maybe her life wouldn’t have to drag on with so many twists and turns.
Her will to survive sank fast. Even her breathing slowed until it was almost gone.
Then–BOOM!
A deafening crash shook the space.
The crash was so deafening as the steel door blocking the sunlight came crashing down.
A flood of bright light burst into the dark warehouse.
The glare was so intense that Tess’s vision turned into a blank sheet of white, sharp and blinding.
Tess squinted and blinked until her sight cleared.
The first thing she saw was a pair of muddy leather shoes.

Even though scuffed, the polished surface still shone with the unmistakable look of something expensive.
The sharp, steady rhythm of footsteps followed.
“Everybody down! Hands on your heads!”
Dozens of bodyguards in suits stormed in. Their faces were hard, their movements in sync. Electric batons snapped alive in their hands, aimed straight at the kidnappers.
It felt like if they so much as moved, the next second those weapons would land right in the middle of their foreheads.
And at the front stood Finn. He wasn’t bluffing–he had the will and the power to see this through.
The chaotic scene inside the warehouse was under control in an instant.
“F–Finn?”
Tess’s dry throat struggled to form his name. The emptiness in her eyes flickered with the first spark of life.
She couldn’t hide her shock when she saw him.
Finn’s gaze cut through the dim warehouse, cold and sharp when it landed on her battered figure. However, when her stunned eyes met his, the iciness in his gaze softened.
Had they really left her there for hours?
He scanned the surroundings.
The damp chill in the warehouse had sunk into him the moment he stepped inside. How could someone as frail as Tess survive it?
His chest heaved. His heart overwhelmed with a storm of emotions.
The veins in his clenched hand stood out, but the moment his eyes touched her pale face, every other feeling faded.
“Does it hurt?”
He dropped to one knee. His voice cracked through the silence.
Tess blinked, dazed, as if unsure whether what she saw was real or just a dream.

Then his rough palm brushed her cheek.
“It’s over now,” he said.
His voice was low, but it carried a strength that calmed her heart.
Tess opened her mouth but felt something caught in her throat.

She couldn’t deny she resented Finn. Maybe even hated him. But after leaving prison, she worked hard to bury those feelings.
She wanted to ignore him, to stop caring. And slowly, she had.
But now, with death hovering over her, seeing Finn brought not confusion but a sharp bitterness.
“You… how did you find me?”
Tess tried to sit straighter, clinging to her usual pride.
But pain shot through her body, her body aching all over, forcing a hiss from her lips.
“Don’t move.”
Finn’s voice was firm, but his hands were gentle.
He carefully pulled back the bloody sleeve on her arm. With the disinfectant and bandages he carried, he started cleaning and wrapping the wound.
