The nurse, who had just arrived, stood frozen in the doorway. Only her eyes moved, trembling and widened.

Ms. Ember slapped Mr. Lock?

The nurse was freaking out inside, but when she saw them looking at her, she pretended she hadn’t seen a thing.

“I–I’ll clean this right away!”

She quickly crouched down, gathered the broken glass into a tray and slipped out as fast as she could.

She didn’t even bother wiping the spilled water.

The door was shut.

Finn slowly looked up.

Tess‘ gaze was ice–cold and carried a deep chill.

“Get out,” she said.

Finn’s anger flared up. He didn’t say anything, but a vein bulged on his forehead.

His jaw tightened, then he stormed out of the room.

The room was left with only Tess and Layla, who was terrified into silence.

Seeing the fear on Layla’s face, Tess pulled her close and comforted her, “It’s okay.”

Her tone and movements were gentle, but her eyes were cold.

Finn walked out of the room and pulled out the phone from his pocket.

He didn’t expect that Tess had set a passcode.

He tried both her birthday and his own’s, but both failed. When he was about to give it to Zane to crack it, he thought of something–Layla’s birthday.

Finn checked through her emails, making sure nothing suspicious was sent in, before locking it again.

He still remembered how devastated Tess was. If someone sent her those photos, he was afraid that would break her down again.

His hand paused, then he called out to the nurse from earlier.

The nurse was so surprised that she almost cried when she turned around.

I’ve just witnessed Ms. Ember slapping Mr. Lock. Am I about to get fired?

Her heart was beating fast, but instead, he shoved a phone in her hand.

“When she falls asleep, put this back on her nightstand. Don’t let her notice.”

As he walked away, a gust of wind from his coat made the nurse snap out of it. “Huh?”

She stared at the phone in confusion.

So, it was nothing serious?

Meanwhile, Steven and Lyra met at a quiet restaurant. There weren’t many people there.

“During the first trial, did anyone tell you what to say?” Steven asked, as he looked straight into Lyra’s eyes to see how she would react.

Lyra was unexpectedly calm as she said, “Yes.”

Her blunt answer made Steven pause.

“Tell me everything,” he said, sitting up straight.

Although she had left the District Court, she still kept track of Steven and Zack’s case and heard about the news right away when Steven lost.

With the evidence from the first trial, losing was almost impossible, unless there was some hidden agenda behind it.

She had been confused, but when Steven contacted her, she agreed to meet with him.

She didn’t work for the court anymore, so she had nothing to worry about.

After listening to her, Steven slammed his fist on the table causing the teacups rattled from the impact.

On the other hand, Lyra stayed calm.

“So that’s why you got dismissed?”

She sipped her tea slowly, giving no clear answer.

Steven stood up. The food had just been served, but he had no intention to stay.

“I’ll help you,” he said seriously.

Lyra barely reacted and said calmly, “What about Tess?”

She put her cup down. For the first time, she was finally showing some emotion.

Steven told her briefly about what happened to Tess.

When she heard the story, she frowned and clenched her hand around the cup tightly.
