Chapter 282 Back In
Finn flicked his phone aside, annoyed.
Figures.
:
She’d never reach out unless it was for someone else.
She could be softhearted to the world and still treat him like an enemy.
He let out a dry, self–mocking laugh and called Zane anyway.

Tess had no idea what ran through his head–only that his mood turned on a dime for no
reason.
She set the phone down with a frown. Layla curled in her arms, eyes half–closed, sipping her cereal.
Tess pushed the sourness away and gently smoothed the new baby fuzz on Layla’s head.
With things as they were, Steven and Zack’s case would be re–accepted and retried.
She finally felt like she could breathe again.
Like she’d just said—everything finally seemed to be moving the right way. The rotten branches deserved to be cut.
She lifted her chin, lashes dipping to hide the cold in her eyes.
Then, she asked the nurse for a vegetarian meal.
The nurse actually looked surprised–Tess was rarely this cooperative about eating and
treatment.
Pleased, she hurried out, then hurried back.
“Mrs. Lock, a lady is asking to see you. She says her name is ‘Lyra Bell.”
Tess blinked. “Send her in.”
Her quick movement tugged her stitches, and the nurse rushed in a panic to check for tears.
Only when she was sure did she leave–still glancing back every few steps–to fetch Lyra.

In the short wait, Tess felt a little useless.

Everyone kept saying she wasn’t seriously hurt, and yet she still didn’t have any strength.
She needed to heal–fast.
Lyra arrived standing straight at the bedside, still in a judge’s robe, severe enough to catch Tess’s eye at once.
With the help of her caregiver, Tess sat up straighter.
She arched a brow, a smile in her eyes. “You’re back in?”
Lyra pressed her lips together, looking at the pale woman in the bed, and only nodded.
“That’s good.”
Tess’s voice was soft. The banding across her ribs still burned.
Lyra didn’t know what to say. Her gaze on Tess was complicated–something she couldn’t
name.
She knew Finn had moved the gears, but the only person who could move Finn that way … was likely the woman in front of her.
After everything Tess had endured, she still remembered Lyra?
Lyra had always been cool, private–no ride–or–die friends, no melodrama. A person made to burn bright in the law, to keep the scales level.
She couldn’t quite understand Tess’s choices, but gratitude still pulled at her.
“Thank you.”
Her voice was solemn.
Tess was taken aback by her formality, then laughed. “What’s all this?”
“I’m back in because of you.”
Tess didn’t argue. She studied Lyra a long time before saying, slowly, “It’s where you belong. I love this work too. I know how badly we need someone like you to stay.
“But that stunt last night–dumping everything–are you sure you’ll be fine?”

It hit her then.

Lyra might be reinstated, but that rash move wasn’t something Tess would ever recommend. For someone so composed to go all–in like that
“I got promoted.”
Lyra shook her head.
Four simple words, and Tess understood at once.
“Congratulations.”
Promoted–and from the glow in Lyra’s face, not a small step.
She wouldn’t be stuck under anyone’s thumb anymore.
“Next time you pull me out of a dumpster fire, I won’t have to hide behind the trash cans.”
Tess teased, in a better mood.
Lyra froze, then realized, touching her nose, a little awkward.
